Batting Order Position vs Rest Topic

I definitely choose rest over putting a player in a 'less optimal' postion in the batting order.  I usually target the weakest teams to rest players, and in a standard OL, more than one out of every 5 teams(1/5 of your schedule) usually win 70 games or less and there are usually 3 that are either on autopilot or just plain awful. If a team is 19-77 he's doing something wrong and most likely he's not going to beat you either.  And quite frankly, a decent starting pitcher is all that's required to beat those teams.   That coupled with using the rest setting liberally in blowouts usually adds up to more than 120 pa's in any spot in the batting order. The amount of 'meaningful Pa's in a season are surprisingly fewer than one would suspect.

It's an imperfect program but this site will come up with what it believes to be the most efficient line-up.  http://www.baseballmusings.com/cgi-bin/LineupAnalysis.py

Bat 'em in the ideal spot in key games, bat 'em low in the lineup in routine games, and rest them against awful opponents.

A bat in the lineup -- in any spot -- is more valuable than a bat on the bench.

Besides, it's easy to draft two leadoff types who are light on PA and alternate them between leading off and batting 8th or 9th.

Good advice doubletruck.  Just as you rest your best players against awful opponents, you can also do so against stud pitchers like Joss if you are not throwing Joss or Maddux yourself.

that link is interesting.  Thanks for sharing.  I'm reading it has its flaws, but certainly less than my winging it.

Here's one example:  Plug in a 0.500 OBP and a 0 SLG for each position in the lineup.  That program says 3.703 runs per game.  The correct answer is more than 8.

Actually my thoughts or question is about the (1)Defensive subs and (2) Rest Players Boxes ... First I want to know if you use or check these boxes at all ... The way i see it i only check the defensive subs box at the 7th or 8th innings with 2 or more runs ... I set my starting Batting Lineup at Rest 92-98 depending on team and situation so as to be replaced for an entire day not later in a game per the Rest Players Boxes ... Please your thoughts and subtle nuances if they are not too revealing ... Also i realize how much easier it is to draft players all 600-660 PA lets say and get 6 $200 K players for my AAA if need be and for efficiencys sake
