Ted Williams = The Most Dangerous MF in the game Topic

Even at the 80m level, I think spending the 4m on the 1953 Ted Williams pays off.  I have used him at every salary cap so a minimum of about 50 seasons.  Dont recall him ever hitting below about .340 or less than 10 hrs.  One year he hit 18 hrs. and had 40 rbis is about 100 ABs.  Another year I counted, he had 22 game winning hits....amazing.  Have not seen that same consistency from Cedeno, Spencer, Ward, Manny, or other cookie PH's.

True his fielding sucks, and he cannot start (maybe once or twice all year) but if you are tied or down by a couple of runs in the late innings...either with people on base or not, LH pitcher or not, he will at a minimum produce 10 Wins a year for you.  Eck, Gagne, Rob Murphy, Wagner...doesnt matter, he hits them all.  However, some managers in LIVE will IBB him a lot...that is not bad either but he OWNS Sparky.

I agree .. I use his .406 season on every $255 mill league. He suffers a little from fatigue before the season is over.  But he hits .340 -.411 and his HR's are pretty strong.  Very clutch hitter !

he'll try to win games you wouldn't have been losing if you spent that $4M elsewhere.

I agree with rbow923.  Sure, his numbers are off the charts, and probably does hit any pitcher.  But the only way I could see myself drafting him and spending $4 mil for  what essentially would amount to a pinch hitter, is if I were playing in a $200mil cap or higher (which I rarely do) where I had a lot cash to spend.  Otherwise, I would think it's a waste of a lot of good money to draft him for an OL because for that same $4 mil, you could get several damn good pinch hitters or even Gates Brown or 19 Cravath (who both can start some games) and still have cash left.

What salary cap leagues do you guys play the most ... or are referring to in these comments.

Other than single-season progressives, I mostly play $80m and lower caps (my favorite is $40m). I very rarely venture above $80m, and $120m is my absolute tops with the exception of my yearly $255m team (just so I can put together a total dream team).

And I only use the Ted Williams in question at the $255m level, there's just so many better values out there when you consider what you give up by drafting him. At $255m it doesn't really matter. You waste a bunch of salary on your bench just drafting the best available and still, I have a hard time topping $220m.

For just 12K more bucks try '88 Pops Corkhill.  He gives almost as good, and sometimes even better production than Gates off the bench and has a B/A+ glove at 1B and OF
