Pitcher pulll setting Topic

Would it be easier or better if we could set pitcher pull settings by "runs allowed" rather than the current 1-5 system. Many times when I have a pitcher set to "5" he is allowed to give up anywhere from 3-5 runs before he is pulled, and this is with other rested and checked pitchers available. It is true there are also times when 2-3 hits will get this pitcher pulled but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. If we could set a pitcher to be pulled after surrendering say "2" ER's wouldn't that make this much easier?

A problem I see with that system is you would need multiple settings.  For example, would you really want a pitcher pulled if he gave up a run in the 2nd and a run in the 8th and has thrown only 85 pitches?

Good point pinotfan, I was thinking primarily of bullpen settings only. I think the current system works pretty well with the starters.

Other than fatigue, I don't see a reason to pull a pitcher since the Sim does not program for Good Days and Bad Days.  Assuming your settings are as you want them, it's safe to say the guy on the mound is the best available.  The fact he gave up two runs has no impact on his performance versus the next batter - which should have a better average outcome for you than if he were pulled, since your current pitcher is the best available.

Of course, my teams have been sucking lately so take my opinion with a grain of solt - or an entire salt lick, for that matter...

Good question about the earned runs. I can't figure any way that would give him other than 5 ER.

They made a mistake.  5 earned runs.

WIS's scorekeeping is generally very good, but not flawless.  They do occasionally screw up earned runs.

Rule 10.16d "No run shall be earned when the scoring runner's advance has been aided by an error".....ect. R.Bean's run is unearned of course because he reached base on an error.  Because Gallaraga scores on the error, it is not assumed that he would have scored on the homerun. (he could have been picked off ect. before the homerun, but he was no longer there),  Which is why that run is also unearned. .... I had to read the rule 10 times, that was a tough one to figure out.

The only UER is Bean, who reached on the error.

The first statement is a direct and very to the point quote from the rule book.  Are you reading the rulebook? If so maybe I missed something.

crimsonblue:  the fact that the post-error runs were scored via the home run means their means of advance are moot: regardless of how the baserunners moved, they would have scored via the HR.  The only unearned run (since all runs occurred before the second out) is the runner who reached via the error.

I understand the rule as written, but can't say I agree with it.  Let's imagine this:

First three batters in an inning get on with walks.  Bases loaded.

Batter #4 hits a routine flyball (to Manny, of course) which is botched.  All runners advance a base, one run scores, bases still loaded.

Batter #5 hits a grand slam.  5 runs have now scored.

Next 3 batters strike out.  Inning over.

According to that rule, only one of the 5 runs is earned.

Doesn't that seem like the pitcher got off very easy for having allowed 3 walks and a grand slam?
I think the rulebook says "scoring" runner, and I take that to mean that... the advancements from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd, are still earned, because they didn't score on an error... at least, whenever I've scored a game, that's how I've always done it

That's it exactly, uncleal.  The specific event that resulted in runners advancing to score was not abetted by the error; their advance was to other bases previous in the inning.  Absent the error, they still would have scored based on what transpired after the error.
