Out of position question... Topic

I'm making plans for a 1917/97 progressive season.  I almost never have players out of position, so I don't know the answer to this.

I'm going to be short PA at 2b and OF and a little short of IP as well.  League has a DH.  The 2b need is short term, 1-2 seasons only.  The OF will be long term, one of my guys is in his last good season.  I will have only 2 draft picks (lots of long term value on roster, don't want to cut anyone else).  One will need to address pitching.  Very strong team, should compete again in this season.

That leaves me one pick to address 2 needs.  But maybe I can handle this another way:I have 1917 Ray Chapman going at SS (C/A+) and 1917 Rogers Hornsby (C/A) pencilled in as DH.  Both are rated at SS only.

I can fill in the DH with extra PA from 1b and C if I want to.

How do you think that Hornsby season would work at 2B?  Would it kill me?

I think Hornsby would be fine at 2B. Not great, but not awful either. Probably the equivalent of D+/B- or so.

Additional question for OOP. If a guy is A/B at short and D/D at 3rd, what does the sim use when I put him at 2nd - do they drop him down from the A/B or D/D?

I know that one... It's from his primary position.

sure, ryno - only used him the last half reg the season, as my regular 2b/couldn't sit him down and i had plenty of outfield help.
this is in a 1927/1967 progressive

What about 1995 Mickey Tettleton at Catcher? He is D-/D-/D (.813/2.74). He only played 3 games at catcher this season.  Played mostly DH and OF (OF is primary pos) so he has 616 PA. Will he okay as my starting catcher in a progressive league?

I would say generally not a good idea.  I ran out Dave Nisson (very similar to Tettleton) as my 2nd part of a tandem C in a '95 progressive.  He started 63 games at C plus some change as a late inning rest guy.  Nisson only committed 4 errors, but gave up 66 PB and was only 4/54 on the SB side.  If I had to do it again, I would grab the best rated arm I could as I could and live with his offensive instead of the PB and SB.
