Reputation Vs. Success Topic

Q: What do schools look for when they are hiring coaches? How can I move up?
A: When you browse the list of job openings, each one will have a brief bit of advice from your agent, which will give you an indication of whether that job is in your range of possible destinations. There are multiple factors that a school uses to decide whether to accept your application, including but not limited to (and not necessarily in this order):
  • Overall Experience
  • Recent Success (primarily over the past 4 seasons)
  • Reputation
  • Loyalty

If both coaches apply, which of these two would you expect to get a job -

If I'm not mistaken, the "recent seasons" window was expanded by seble to more than four seasons in whatever the last jobs tweak was. I do not recall the correct number now, although the number 7 is sticking in my mind for whatever reason.

To answer your question, assuming we're comparing apples to apples and both coaches are from the same division, I would expect 2 to be hired unless they were going for a high elite program where the A- reputation for coach 2, as silly as it may sound, could have come into play.

Both coaches are in D3, and the jump is to B prestige D2 team in a top D2 RPI divison.

I'll see if I can find anything on the seasons window changing, thanks for the heads-up.

About a year ago, Seble said "I'm working now on improving the calculation of success in a coach's resume and wanted to provide some more detail on the direction I'm heading.  Basically, the old system looked at only the past 4 seasons, with about half of the total weight placed on the most recent season.

What I'm working on now is a system that will incorporate the coach's entire history in that world.  There will still be more weight placed on recent seasons, but it will be much more evenly distributed across the entire resume.  This should be a fairer system and will require more long-term success instead of just stringing together a few good seasons."

The FAQ still says four though (not that it is updated ever) and there was never any release note (that I found) indicating that the new system was actually put into place (though it may have been).

zbrent - i really would be blown away if reputation held you back, and you lost the job to the coach in question. i mean, i honestly dont think reputation is a factor in WHO gets the job - only if you are eligible or not. but i could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure rep only matters to whether you qualify as well. In terms of resume, you are way ahead, especially when the window is 10 seasons.
