At this point I honestly don't remember how much the difference was, just that there was a difference. I was fairly new at the game as well (maybe within my 5th season I think) so I was still learning a lot. It's also possible that it was related to the players being a year older. If I were to take a guess, (at that point in time) maybe somewhere between 5-6 steals more on average. I haven't run either defense alone for more than a couple games in probably 20-30 seasons now though.
As far as the allocation goes, I split 25 minutes between the 2 defenses. Usually with a higher % of those minutes going to the zone. Normally I would put 20 if it was a single defense. So something like 15-17 in zone, and 8-10 in press. With press being the secondary defense (only up to the halfcourt) I don't focus as much on it, but player IQ's can still get into the B range while my zone IQ's usually are A's by junior-senior year. Depending on the player, their ratings usually max out by senior year, but the important stuff is maxed by junior.
With this I can swap between my 2-3 and 3-2 depending on the team and if I find that neither defense seems right for the opponent, I'll swap to a press occasionally.
With all that said, my success is not great (although I believe this is an incident of poor recruiting more than anything else. For a long time I really never put much focus on def and ath and also ran into a few bad classes). Fairly consistent NT appearances, but poor progression after that. Still playing with it though. Too stubborn to change.
