D2 Press or Man [or Zone] Topic

Anyone have a strong feeling one way or the other as to which is more effective, and feel like sharing that feeling and perhaps reasons for it?

At d2 you have to step up your game and go with the press. The good teams use press so I would go with the press. You ll see my press when we play each other:) .

Either one, both are stronger than the zone but I'll always have a soft spot for the zone.

I have one as well, and I'm *really* tempted to try zone again at D2 - in part because everyone seems to agree it is weaker, so would be more of a challenge and more fun to win with it (if I can).

EDIT - the more I think about it, the more I want to try to win with zone again. Does anyone know a D2 coach/team having good success with zone at the moment?

Check out bbunch (South Arkansas) and hogstench (Findlay) in Allen.

Could be totally wrong here. But each defense needs diff things...press I find needs more speed and ath (which is of course needed in all...but can kill ya if dont have it). I again think it comes down to recruiting and finding HOPEFULLY  pieces that fit your team...maybe not a stud...but  helps your weakenesses and cover future years....not easy to do

If you find some success running the zone in the GLV, give me some tips. I can make the NT running a Zone press, but I struggle to get past 1 and done. I love the flexibility zone offers when gameplanning. I think my struggles lie more in recruiting than gameplanning though.

Well, I had reasonable success with it in D3 at Hamline, but the players at D3 generally have more holes that can be exploited, so I think game-planning matters more there than elsewhere. I'm not yet sure how that might translate to D2...

the only thing about zone i hate is lack of TO's. I can deal with giving up so many offensive boards, but i think zone should cause more TO's than it does now. I have to have extremely elite defenders just to come close to matching a good MTM team. I still love zone though.

That is why I run a zone/press reddyred. I know a lot of people say that running a combo D is a waste, but I found it did increase my steals. It's been awhile since I've changed to the combo so I'm not sure how much effect the combo D has now over just plain zone, but the flexibility it provides is great. It really gives me the ability to handle any kind of team. I just need to improve my recruiting I think to have more success.

I have thought about trying that but unless the IQ's arent as important then I'd have to agree that it's a waste. I just don't see how to get reasonable minutes in IQ for both D's. How do you allocate your IQ minutes doing that? I agree it gives you way more flexibility but that comes at the cost of your players physical improvement. How many more steals would you say the hcp/zone accounted for? If it's a decent number I will have to re-evaluate my thought process on this one.

At this point I honestly don't remember how much the difference was, just that there was a difference. I was fairly new at the game as well (maybe within my 5th season I think) so I was still learning a lot. It's also possible that it was related to the players being a year older. If I were to take a guess, (at that point in time) maybe somewhere between 5-6 steals more on average. I haven't run either defense alone for more than a couple games in probably 20-30 seasons now though.

As far as the allocation goes, I split 25 minutes between the 2 defenses. Usually with a higher % of those minutes going to the zone. Normally I would put 20 if it was a single defense. So something like 15-17 in zone, and 8-10 in press. With press being the secondary defense (only up to the halfcourt) I don't focus as much on it, but player IQ's can still get into the B range while my zone IQ's usually are A's by junior-senior year. Depending on the player, their ratings usually max out by senior year, but the important stuff is maxed by junior.

With this I can swap between my 2-3 and 3-2 depending on the team and if I find that neither defense seems right for the opponent, I'll swap to a press occasionally.

With all that said, my success is not great (although I believe this is an incident of poor recruiting more than anything else. For a long time I really never put much focus on def and ath and also ran into a few bad classes). Fairly consistent NT appearances, but poor progression after that. Still playing with it though. Too stubborn to change.

After the switch to potential I struggled running the press because I couldnt always find players with enough speed. After I switched to the zone I started having more consistent success because you can use a wider range of players and still have success. Before I switched I couldn't even make it past the 2nd round and in the 7 seasons since Ive switched I have a sweet 16, an elite 8, and am currently ranked #9.

It also helps the right now I have a strong defender at SF which makes a big difference when switching between 2-3 and 3-2.
