Has anyone ever signed a below average player, offered him 30 minutes and a start with the intent of benching him every minute of the season, in order to force his hand in quitting?  The strategy would be to sign the guy in order to fill your roster and then carry over a bunch of money.  Offer him the moon so he gets mad and transfers, which opens up the scholarship for next season and you have saved all the carry over cash in the process.  Ever been done?  I realize it's a risk in the fact that you don't know for sure that he will quit but, you could earn yourself an extra 15k or more for the next recruiting season if it played out right.

A safer strategy would be to sign a senior transfer player, so you know for sure they'll be gone after one year.

Yeah, of course that would be nice, but that isn't always an option and sometimes those battles end up costing 20 or 30k.  When available, I would go senior every time but when not.... just entertaining other scenarios.

but you will take a rep hit

Yes, very true.  Any ideas of how big?  And at the end of the day would a small rep hit really hurt if it gave you an extra 15 to 20K to recruit the following year?  (I am asking because I don't know, by the way!)  Thanks

I'd guess from A+ to A-. It'll take about 5 seasons to get back to A+.  If you aren't planning on job hopping for a few seasons, sure, why not. There's always the possibility he doesn't quit, although I'd think the odds are in your favor.

And reputation only effects job hunting correct?  It doesn't really impact recruiting does it?

Will it make promises less valuable?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't, though it really should.

Five seasons?  Unless something has changed, you're looking at no more than two max.  Several times in the past I've ended up cutting guys I decided I didn't like, rep drops to A- for the season, season rolls over, rep goes right back to A+.

Also, I could tell absolutely no difference during recruiting if I was at an A+ rep or an A-.  Hell, I couldn't tell the difference once when I had an F rep (thanks booster gift experiment).

always seems to take longer than that for me, but its been a while and I don't really pay attention to rep most of the time anyway, so emy is probably right

There is a decent chance that he won't quit and the strategy will backfire. It would have to be an enormous amount of carryover to even consider it. Generally not worth it. Remember, if you don't sign the guy, you have another $15K from that open schollie the following season anyway.

Does how long it takes your rep to go back from, say A- to A+, depend upon how long you've been coaching?

More bluntly, if you've already built up a stellar reputation over many seasons, does that make it easier to take a hit and rebound more quickly than if you are a new coach or less experienced?

I really don't know because I haven't had it happen, so that's why I'm asking.
