Huh?  You shot better from the field, nailed your threes, and made your free throws.  If your opponent shot better from the line, from three, and/or the field you would have certainly lost.

i made less free throws, i got dominated on the offensive boards & total boards, turned the ball over more, almost doubled their personal foul totals, less points in paint, less bench points --   i just am shocked we won that game..

Ur free throw percentage matters not total free throws made. Ex. 20-40 ft< 10-15 ft

Simple... you scored more points than he did.

Basketball basics...There are two ways to win a basketball game: efficiency and opportunity. If you win both of those categories, by definition you win the game. If you split them, whoever won their game advantage by more will win. He soundly beat you in opportunity (get more chances to score) while you soundly beat him in efficiency (points per chance to score). And your "efficiency" was so-to-speak 2 points better than his "opportunity." Makes sense?

What?  How can you say free throw percentage is more important than free throws made?  By that logic, a team that shoots 1/1 would be more desirable than a team that shoots 19/20, which I assume everyone would agree is not the case.  In your example, at the end of the day one team gets 20 points from FT's and the other gets 10.  Give me 20/40 any day over 10/15, and thats not even getting into offensive rebound opportunities either.

Should have made it clear that in this case my logic would have worked

Or the foul trouble you're putting the other team into by drawing those extra fouls.

Playing this game to many years with many frustrating outcomes, I would better say "How did I win this game" than "How did I lose this game".

Of course this said in jest

FT percentage obviously isn't the be all and end all, for the reason you stated. But FTs made can't be either. If rebounding and turnovers are equal, the team who shoots 10/15 from the line is probably going to get 13 or 14 more FG attempts than the team who shoots 20/40 from the line. If they make six of those, they win.

If one team takes a large amount of free throws but misses a ton of them, you can basically count them as missed shots. You can pretty much factor that in with FG %. So as long as taking all of those fouls doesn't hurt the team's ability to keep guys on the floor the missed free throws are just that, misses. I'm pretty sure that's what stats like true shooting % and others take into account. Also, using 1/1 vs. 19/20 is a laughable retort to the argument.

zbolton, if you ask them nicely, I'm sure they could take away the win.
