So i guess RPI doesn't mean what it used to Topic

on thing that has alwasy puzzled me about the list of selection criteria above...

it is obvious that these things are not weighted equally... if they were, then they would cancel each other out and need not be mentioned.

for instance  two hypothetical teans... assume identical scheudle or very close to it:

TEam A
19-7
vs  top50       1-2
vs   51-100    6-2
vs 101-200   6-1
vs  200-384   6-2

Team B
19-7
vs top50          0-3
vs  51-100      5-3
vs  101-200    6-1
vs   200-384   6-0

I assume what the FAQ means is that Team A will be helped by thier goodwins,,, obviosuly.  but i further assume that the goodwins help more than the badlosses hurt.   heck maybe the losses dont even matter at all?   (for this part of the equation)   so that,  top50wins*A  +  top100wins*B + top200wins*C   where A, B and C are multipliers and A>B<C.   tha wwould almost make sense.   it still feels wrong that a bad loss is not punished as much as a good win is rewarded,  but i guess while Team B is steadier,  teamA has at least shown glimpses that when they are at their best, they might be a tourney worthy team.

P.S I'm not complaining, I was simply not aware.

I just got excited when my RPI was 39 after the CT and thought I might get a prestige boost from a NT bid. Disappointed, but my team is bad. Still have SIM AI seniors. I seem to recall a top 40 RPI being a lock to the NT back in the days.

Although nothing may have changed and I'm just remembering it wrong. Or perhaps not taking into account that at D1 there are 10-15 seeds in the tournament that are not true NT teams. Unlike what you'd get in D2 or D3 where only like 1-5 teams that were bad teams in the NT. I was the 5th team left out so that could be the difference.

Mine is "try to schedule the best teams you think you can beat"
what is your theory on home away,  a?

im still leaning toward there being value to playing road games.   rpi is defintiely A PART of the selection process, right?
and in the rpi formula given in the FAQ, it says home win is worth .6,  home loss is worth 1.4     road win is worth 1.4   road loss is worth .6

so,  if two teams go 5-5 vs an identical schedule, but one team plays all home games and one plays all road games....  the team on the road will have an effective record of 7-3  and the home team will have an effecctive record of 3-7.   seems like a pretty huge difference and i cant imagine that your home court advantage is going to help you win 4 more games,,, especially at d3   (seems like that multiplier should be different at d1 vs d2 vs d3 where HCA is significantly different)

but, a, this year, to hear you tell it,  you dont think you can beat anybody!!!  ;-)

(seen the latest projection report, btw?   TylerT is on the good edge of the bubble,  it might only take one upset to get you in.  but, please, dont make it against the Poets,  i dont know if my fragile psyche can handleanother demoralizing loss)

Well, as a road game does have an effect on "being able to win" that goes into the "toughest game you can win ". Still, I would value a home game I could win against the number five RPI team more than a road game I could win against, say, number 68. I think its definitely _a_ factor! just not at the top of the list.

However ... If I hadn't had the case of having a bevy of division two teams forcing me to settle for my second options, my core would be about two players deeper, and I would have won a few more: the thing about guessing what you can win is - sometimes recruiting kicks you between the legs.

rpi is defintiely A PART of the selection process, right?
I don't think that's precisely right - I think RPI and the selection process consider a lot of the same things, but that RPI is not directly considered  to determine the order of teams selected. Does that make sense?

do you guys ever type up a long well-thought-out post ... and youre almost done... and you hit the backspace or something and the browser backs up to previous page and wipes away all traces of your neargenius post?

i guess that Gods way of saying:  "davey,  thats just too damn many words.... nobody wants to read all that crap"

but God may not realize how stubborn I am.   this Lost Post may tick me off, but I refuse to be held down.  i will recreate this epic post even if it means im going to have to waste half the day and not get any chores done before the big hoops games this afternoon   (see there is a bright side to everything)

btw,  this reminds me of the two greatest advancements in HD history.
  1.  the storing of CoachesCorner posts that can be scrolled back several pages.  it used to be that once you got knocked off that first page, it was gone.
  2.  and even more importantly was the reduction and or elimination of the character limit for CC posts.   it used to be that if your post was longer than whatever fits in those three lines.... boom... it was lost... try again.   the system would let you type it all in,  but when you pressed enter,  poof,  it would all go away and return an error screen.   later,  that was increased so that you could type something in that would be broken up into multiple posts,  but only up to a certain point,  if it went beyond that point, it went poof.    since ive returned to hd, ive either become much less verbose  (not likely)  else they have removed that limit altogether.   if you know me,  you know how important this is to me

oldave, you owe me one - i got that fixed. the second time around, i mean :) i guess you and me are probably the only guys who really would get excited about that, though ;) truly, i was very excited. i think it was random, too - sometimes, you could post a lot of stuff, sometimes, you couldn't. occasionally the same exact post would work if i tried it later and thought to copy it in the first place. it took about 3 tries over the course of a year but finally got seble enough info and he fixed it. seble does get a lot of **** but my experience is hes very receptive and responsive in fixing at least a sizable portion of the bugs reported to him. some, i get the feeling he already knows and tried and failed. but a lot of times i've been pleasantly surprised.

you know about a year ago i found a free scouting visit information bug, and a myriad of other related bugs that mostly screwed you over, possibly including free effort bugs - and he fixed it all in 2 days? even took my advice on how to fix it from a software standpoint, i believe... i was pretty impressed. but i guess shortly after he banned all my teams and i cried, so i went back to being ****** at him. but hey, you can't win them all!

i said you were intelligent, not unintelligent! if you change "surprised to hear this from an intelligent coach like you", to "surprised to hear this from a coach with no memory like you", it would be rather surprising that i was surprised - no?

An intelligent reader would not have misread your intelligent post regarding my intelligence.   I'd be surprised if this post didn't last at the top of the forums for 20 mins before etta posts something about someone being wrong about something.
