Promised Minutes Topic

If a guy is promised 10 minutes does he have to hit at least 10 minutes every game or is it an average number of minutes (i.e. if he gets 15 a lot of games, and 9 every now and then will his WE drop?)

To piggy back off that:  Can you redshirt someone who you've promised mins/starts too?  And if so do those promises go out the window or do they exist after the redshirt year?

You have one RS to use on anyone you like. Use it on a guy you have made promises to, and his WE will plummet because not only was he expecting not to be wearing a RS, he expected what he was pitched: a start and minutes. He will grouse and foment revolution and you better not turn your back on him.

The promises exist for the year in which they are made. In your example, you just give the guy 3 reasons to hate you for one season. Any you get a leg-up on whomever you were recruiting against who did not make false promises to help ink a recruit.

yeah, they go out the window because the player certainly transfers to another team =)

(i think they are guaranteed to leave, but if not, the promises still go out the window)

As of last check, it's 90% of promised minutes and starts. It used to be 80%. If he plays 20, he must start 18. If he's promised 10 minutes, make sure he gets 9. Once the conference tournament starts, you don't need to worry about keeping your promises.

So if I promise a freshman 10 minutes per game, I only have to get him over 9.0 mpg?

Also, is there a minimum # of games played for minutes promises? I can't play him 10 games at 25 mpg while he plays 0 minutes the other 22 games, right?

This definitely isn't something that's set in stone.  Each player is different.  If you promised a start, you can start him roughly 20 or 21 games and it's *usually* fine.  Within the last year, I have about 7 or 8 guys that started 21/26 games and never had a WE drop.  Also, those missed starts usually need to be on the back end of the season to prevent him from getting mad.  In other words, if he doesn't start 6 of the first 10 games, you'll definitely see an early WE drop that can usually be recovered by starting him the rest of the way.

As for minutes, it's minutes per 26 games.  So if he rode the bench for 5 games, you need to make up those 50 minutes in other games.  And yes, you can *usually* get away with 8.5-9.0 mpg.  But if he sends you an angry email (regarding starts or minutes), it's a possibility he'll transfer if you don't give him what was promised.

The last sentence is definitely true.  The promises are for regular season only.

So another way of putting could be: if you promise a player 10 mins per game, you need to get him 260 total minutes(ish) in the regular season, pre conference-tournament?

So a coach may want to aim for 260 minutes rather than focus on 10 each game?

Correct.
