Promising a Start Topic

Historically, I have only promised starts to players I intended to start if signed. I am considering offering starts to increase odds of early affinity for my program, then telling the kids they are not going to start. Does anyone use this technique? If so, how much blackmail in terms of additional HV's do you send when bearing the bad news? Is there a risk to this technique? If so, do you think the risk outweighs the reward of obtaining consideration on the cheap early in recruiting?

Thank you for your continuing courtesy and cooperation.

Sincerely,

get them tight first. be wary if you are battling/have battled someone for him, or if you appear "weak" and could face a battle that pops up same cycle. The inform of redshirt which cancels the promise takes effect as soon as you confirm clicking it, while the HVs don't run until the next cycle rolls. A few HVs will all but ensure he come back around, unless someone else has/had effort in or you aren't really tight and your inform drops you below a threshold where he will usually accept HVs. If that happens try letters and if a few batches of those don't work and no one else has grabbed him yet try evals. They have little value relative to HVs and CVs but they can't be refused (which is how pulldowns work).

FWIW I don't mean to imply you don't know some of these basic concepts, but sometimes rookies read the forums and find information this way.

Thanks, DAC. Nice job providing what I needed and turning it into a broader teaching tool. Just how this forum should work.

dac, you said "The inform of redshirt which cancels the promise takes effect as soon as you confirm clicking it, while the HVs don't run till the next cycle", I was always under the impression that all recruiting actions happened at the same time during the cycle. I was just wondering how you know this is the case?

empirical personal experience, a ticket exchange with seble and talking with other coaches. I'm on tablet, but when I get to something with a mouse I'll see if I can turn up the ticket

Sort of sad that recent... "events" have made the use of that disclaimer at the bottom of your post a necessity.

The short answer is that yes this works, with the potential downside being that he rejects efforts once you break out the inform of redshirt.

Dac, what is the practical difference when the redshirt takes effect? Meaning, I always put in additional efforts when I inform of redshirt, but I've never once had a player immediately stop considering me when I told him this even though the other efforts don't take effect under the cycle ends. From my experience, it takes effect immediately for the purposes of canceling promises, in that you would have to issue new ones and can no longer reinstate the old ones, but in terms of actual recruiting effort it makes no difference at all until the end of the cycle. That point, to the OPs question, means that factor has no effect on the strategy.

I have had players stop considering me after a rs.

Same here. For me, it's gotten to the point that I don't even risk it with a guy I like. Better to sign him, and see if he takes it, IMO.
