12 open schollies Topic

So for fun I'm reentering Knight and have reserved a team that will have 12 open schollies next time around. Because the team has 10 seniors and 2 walkons, i expect them to make the PI, if not the NT and have a prestige of C+ or B-.

This should be fun because A) I've never had more than 6 and B) I haven't recruited DII in several years. I've also never recruited the northeast, so that should be fun as well.

I know I can only take 6 freshmen. I know that long term, it'd be best to start freshmen and get them as good as possible as soon as possible.

Should I try and fill all 12 or maybe just 9?

Should i get 6 freshmen? Maybe one to RS and one ineligible?

I don't know if I plan on staying with the team long term, i bought 4 seasons, should I care about evening out classes?

I would make sure you sign 6 quality freshmen.  Then next year sign 6 more very good players with a full budget again.  If you have extra money this time, maybe seek 1-year transfer guys.  They tend to be expensive, but not always at the D3 level.  If you're going short-term, you can make your best team by having 4 SRs and 4 JRs in 4 years.  You'll be awful in season 1.  But that's the price you pay for a cheap shot at a title.

Do I get 12 schollies worth of $ or 6?

Completely agreed, you should at least get money up to 8 or so.

The problem is that the system will be gamed up to whatever the limit is.  Coaches are making a good strategy decision to build teams with a 6/6/0/0 class structure as the rules are now (always playing FCP).  That maximizes budget timed with Prestige.  I would hate to see a bunch of 8/4/0/0 structures or worse.

The thing to do is to choose what kind of team you want to build at D2.  You can succeed with any system at that level.  To maximize your budget, you want to have 6 open scholarships again next season.   You'll have to play it by ear, but I would target 5 good freshmen (1 at each position), then see what you can get for cheap.

The other option is to sign 6 freshmen and as many seniors as you can and take the rest in walkons.  Next season, sign 6 more freshmen.  Play FCP and just suffer through that first season.

I'm not asking for an 8 person class limit, I'm saying if you have up to 12 schollies, you should get money for at least 8.  6 is really limiting when you're trying to fill 10+, especially at D2 and D3.

Understood.  I'm simply saying that the goal in this situation is to maximize recruiting budget over a period of years.  Don't worry about this season alone.  The same analysis would need be done under the rules you suggest as well.  If you only get cash for 8 out of 12 scholarships, then you'd be making a budget-busting mistake by signing more than 8 freshmen and sophomores.  Your recruiting budget over the 2 year period would be lower than if you target maximizing your budget over several seasons.

Right, but you don't want to be a lame duck for season 1 either.

Yeah. In a big rebuild you're almost ALWAYS not very good in season 1.

I decided to send a sitemail asking if I could reserve a different team. The reason I picked this one was the challenge of strategizing for 12 schollies with 12 schollies worth of $.
