Need help from the experienced coaches :) Topic

I am recruiting in D3... Need to sign a point guard... Have to kids interested and was wondering who you guys thought would be better for the now and future as I am rebuilding so he will start four years at point for me.  They are:

Player A:     Ball Handling - 48 (Black) / Pass - 61 (Red) / Speed - 48 (Black) / Def - 21 (Blue) / Work Ethic - 69

Player B:     Ball Handling - 35 (Blue) / Pass - 23 (Blue) / Speed - 46 (Black) / Def - 42 (Red) / Work Ethic - 15

I figure speed cancels each other out.  I think (if I've read correctly) the 15 Work Ethic will grow because he is getting the start, he'll just have slower development at first.  Defense will be similar at the end.  That's why I am leaning toward Player A because I feel his BH and Pass will be superior in the end, but wanted some opinions.  Thanks!

A.  Too much of B is potential, and he has a fairly poor shot at realizing it.  Also, I would take this down.  Odds are very few coaches would want to recruit those players (just being honest with you on this one...), but all the same it's not good practice to share potentials of easily searchable players with people who may be in your world but not have FSS'ed your state.  At least convert everything to the nearest multiple of 5 and make it harder...

As I alluded to above, however, I'd set your sights higher than either of these guys.  Neither is a very good player, and I don't think any world is full enough at this point that any human-coached team should have to recruit a guy like that very often.

No, thank you!  I appreciate the honesty.  I had to sign 6 guys.  And this is my first season recruiting, so I guess I will set my sights higher next off season!

If you had the money to send a scouting report and found out player B was high-high potential in BH and P then I would go with him. But if player A had high-high defense I may consider him, especially if my team needs better defenders.

See that 15 Work Ethic for Player B?  Even with high-high potentials, that 15 WE is going to make it VERY difficult to reach the max in those categories.  Pass.

I always recruited guys with at least a work ethic of 30, with the exception of once, where he was at 29.

It doesn't matter if you redshirt, start him, give him 30mph that 15 work ethic guy will never develop.

I did sign player A.  Thank you guys for your feedback and help!

That's not true. He might not ever max out but with a 15 WE you can expect 5-8 points of growth in a blue category for the season with 20 minutes of practice time.

I still wouldn't recommend recruiting LOW WE guys as a good strategy...maybe a good stragedy, but not a good strategy.

When searching for players, set your WE to look for 40 and above...

If you have a low prestige is especially prudent to go for guys with low work ethic because other coaches aren't going to go after them. Anything under 15 I tend to personally stay away from but like TJ said you can max out a guy in a couple ratings if you really focus on it, you may end up losing a little somewhere else but I've definitely made the mistake of recruiting guys because of their high work ethic and had them max out during their Junior year.
