My brother thinks that this year isn't going to be that great for him.  He has a stud of a senior PG and a decent sophomore class.  He wants to RS his senior and wait for the sophomore class to gain a year and then have a better year the following year.  Has anybody ever done anything like this?

I've seen it done a few times.

I do it all the time, it's a great move most of the time.

Is it beneficial?  Does he have any chance of not returning the following year if he's got substantial playing time the previous three years?

I've long been an advocate for this (underhanded) tactic.  I've done it before and will do it again.  Just keep in mind that the players WE will drop to 1, meaning not only will the player not improve at all during the redshirt year, but he will also lose skill points over the "summer" before his RS SR season.  So basically the player will not be as good as he was during his JR season, asides from any IQ growth.

If the player still has a lot of room to grow and you have the balls for it, you could keep the player off your depth chart his SR season and apply the RS at the end of the year.  His WE will drop during the season, but not to 1, and his attributes will still grow.  Of course, this carries the very real risk that the game will still play your SR, meaning they will no longer be eligible for a RS.  I would not do this, unless maybe the player still has some blue categories left.

I couldn't handle the loss of WE when I just tried to do it, even though it would have been a good more for both the team and the player to resolve a positional logjam. It's a shame there's no nuance to redshirting in the sim. I figure to avoid this issue entirely in the future and redshirt only freshmen with limited upside as a class balance maneuver. I like thatit forces me to keep getting better at recruiting.

I like that you have that attitude.
So many guys play this game and when they find a problem they percieve (real or imagined), they come on the forums and want the game changed to solve their problem.
Play within the game rules of the sim, learn what works, get better at it and win.
Well done TC

I didn't mean to ask that question sounding like the game should change, I am just trying to figure out information inside the game based on what people have done.  I'm sorry if I gave you that impression!

My mentoree recently redshirted a senior.  He graduated 7 players and didn't want to recruit an upperclassmen.   He had 3 senior centers so he redshirted one of them to go with his 6 freshmen.

How did it work out for him?

I know I didn't mean to imply that you were jay. Not at all. Justletting you know whathappened to me and how I resolved it, trying to give you another way to view the situation you're in. I'm pretty sure zags generous response to me also wasn't suggesting you were doing that. He was responding my post only. ANd thanks, zags. I appreciate the kindness andI completely agree. The fun of this game is simming being a coach, not an accountant with a math problem.

tcplotts, I think jaymc was referring to zags post, not yours.

Jaymc, my response was to tcplotts and not u at all. Your questions look pretty legit and the discussion here is actually pretty good.
I just found his last comment kind of refreshing.

zags and tc, ok good!  Glad we are all on the same page.  The coaching community in the forums have always been super helpful on all my questions and I didn't want to seem like I was overstepping boundaries and was just making sure!  Because I really do love this game and want to learn as much as possible while still figuring stuff out on my own and my goal has never been and will never be to make anybody mad or disgusted by my actions! :)
