Player Quitting? Topic

Is this really a thing?

I promised minutes to this freshman. He is 2 minutes shy of what I promised him and he sends me this message:

"I guess you're no different than any other coach. You're a liar. It would kill my parents if I quit, but you're not leaving me much choice."

Is he seriously going to quit? His WE has only dropped 2 points.

Oh yeah players can definitely quit the team.  This is actually the desired outcome a lot of times, because when a player quits you get his scholarship money.  As opposed to cutting a player, where you don't get scholarship money immediately.

Has anyone ever actually had a player quit in protest of you cutting one of his teammates?  Like actually had it happen to them personally?  I always hear it could happen, but haven't ever heard someone say it actually happened to them.

I've heard of it happening when people cut 4 players or above, but the last two teams I took over I cut 4 or 5 players on, and no one else on the team quit, so I think the chances of players quitting in protest is rather low.

I had another player leave after cutting one.in div 2...forget excuse but was on lines 'it is apparent you don't know talent'.

It's only happened to me once, but yes I've had a player quit, because I cut someone else.

As far as the OP, they will leave your team sometimes, but those messages are not always the actual action they will take. I've got a PF on another team that has been threatening to leave for 2 seasons now (over like 2 min one season and 5 the next season), but he's still there, and what's worse is that I wanted him to quit and he didn't.

if you want to avoid him quitting, boost his minutes now.  If you give him the promised minutes the rest of the way, usually you will get a thanks, I'm okay message

yes players sometimes quit because of broken promises

yes, I have seen another player quit after cutting a couple of players.  Have not seen it happen with just one cut

fd343ny is correct.  You only need the promised minutes "from now on", not averaged for the entire season

oh, i can attest it does happen. i took over a DII team in tark a season ago and cut a chump player--a redshirt freshman with very low potential. right away i get a message that my highest-rated player, a senior PF, had quit in protest bc 'i cut his boy' or something.

it was a real bummer bc that was a top 25, 2nd round team without that PF. who knows what could have been? tragic.
