good coaching has not taken a back seat at high d1. within the higher levels of talent, the coaching differences are much more meaningful than the team talent levels.
its kind of funny how it happens consistently over time - when the real teams get really really good (as they have been in d1 for ages), people say its basically a coin flip and that coaching is dead. the coin flip days were great to me because i could get my talent level up near the level of the big boys, even on C prestige colorado as a rookie recruiter, which would have been beyond impossible in these days. and then, it was ALL about the coaching, which obviously was good for me personally. but anyway, the point is, when talent is even, all that matters then is the coaching. the guys looking up, are right to say its about talent, because they are so far off to compete. but its traditionally been the guys who are in that top tier of talent who complain most loudly on that front.
the same is true today. when you look at big d1 teams, occasionally you get these experienced, 860 overall teams, that really do have a talent edge on the other top teams, where talent makes a pretty big difference. but generally the top tier of teams is pretty even talent wise, the top 5-10 or so, without a huge dropoff down to 15ish. meanwhile, if you take two evenly matched teams by talent, one built and coached ok (by the standards of your average A+ prestige d1 coach), one team planned and coached exceptionally, the latter team can easily double if not triple the NT championship winning % of the former, "evenly matched" by talent team. if "ok" really means "****** for an a+ coach" then it could easily be 5x. there is not nearly enough ceiling left, over your average top d1 teams, in the talent arena, to be doubling and tripling teams just on talent, in terms of NT title odds. so, its really all about coaching, at that point.
i guess to me the paradigm is simple. recruiting is the most important thing in the game, until you and everyone you are competing with are really good at it. then, its roughly the least important thing in the game :) then, its all about team planning, team setup, and game planning. obviously recruiting is still really important im just saying it gets harder and harder for that to be the main differentiator anymore, then the other stuff really becomes the difference maker.
