Redshirting plans in recruiting question. Topic

So I have a recruit whom I would love to redshirt. I recruited him to the point of considering my school then I told him about my red shirting plans. He didn't like that and said,"you crazy." Now is no longer considering my school BUT he is still pending on the scholarship offer. Can I sway his decision once more and retain the ability to redshirt him without issue or is the "you crazy" letter a definite NO to red shirting? And if I CAN change his mind are HV's and CV's the best way to go? If I can't successfully redshirt him I won't. I'll just drop the plans because even with 4 years of development this guy will help my team. Just looking to fine tune the recruiting a little bit. Any suggestions would be much obliged.

I try to RS a player every year but I NEVER inform during recruiting or the lowest rated freshman at his position.. You can almost always RS the lowest rated freshman on you team or the lowest rated player at his position.

I never inform of a pending redshirt either. I will try to reshirt the one I want, but am always ready to switch gears.  I general they normally accept accept-especially if there is a line at their position

Gotcha. Well I sent 2 HVs, a CV and another Scout. He's back to considering me. So, is there really any point to informing of RS then?

Yes.  There are times when guys won't take a R/S.  The ONLY way to guarantee a player will take a R/S is to inform him during recruiting.  Informing of R/S is roughly worth a negative 2 HV hit to your recruiting efforts, so to offset that you need to send at least 2 additional HVs.

Yes.  If you want to redshirt the freshman with the most potential to improve, but not the lowest rated freshman that you will sign (and you do!), then you want to inform of redshirt to be sure he will accept it.  JuCo players need to be informed of redshirt or they will almost always see a big WE drop.

If you are certain that the player with the most potential to improve will also be your lowest rated freshman, then informing is probably a waste.  Although, every now and then your lowest rated freshman will have a slight drop in WE when the redshirt is applied.

From my experience, the recruit will ALWAYS say "you're crazy" - but if they are still considering you than just ignore his complaints.

the main thing is the scholarship message.  it doesn't look like there is a battle for any of your N. Dakota recruits, so no need to go overboard if he's giving you a positive scholarship message, despite his complaint about RS.

Please do not take this the wrong way, but I think you could use a little time before signings and read aejones post "How to win at D2 and D3".  Your class of prospects at ND could benefit from that post.

Much appreciated on the post recommendation. Reading it now.

Instead of starting a new post I figured I'd just post here. Sorry if it's a little off-topic. So, will a freshman who I leave off my depth chart progress faster than a redshirt freshman?

I'm gonna say no clansing although knowing what I do work ethic and potential play a major factor here. Can you link the player?

It will depend on the WE of the players involved.  Fwiw, player growth depends on WE and playing time.  Leaving a player off of the depth chart entirely could upset him and he may transfer after the season is over.  It's built into the engine that freshman expect 3-4 minutes of playing time, averaged over 26 games (sophs expect 8 mins, juniors 12 mins).

Actually freshmen have no expectations whatsoever of playing time unless there were promises made during recruiting.  So a freshman could never play a minute all season and never say a word (again, unless there were promises)

The reason why I ask is because I figure if I leave a freshman off the depth chart until right before the CT (or whenever the latest you can redshirt a freshman) and redshirt him as late as possible, I can guarantee that his WE will remain intact for the season even though he isn't seeing any clock.
