Why would I foul in the BACK COURT? Topic

"Byron McCarty is called for the reach on Eugene Sanders in the backcourt - foul #3 on Byron McCarty, team foul #10"

This happened with my team UP by 5 with under 30 seconds to go in the game.  I DO NOT play a full court press.  My team made a FT with 24 seconds to go.  This foul occurred with 20 seconds to go.

I need an explanation! (my team ended up blowing the lead and losing in 2 overtimes).

I'm at a loss as to why this foul would happen.  Anyone?

McCarty went for the steal and made a whoopsie.

I think there needs to be a setting where you can 'call off the dogs' at the end of games. Like up 4 with 30 seconds left, just DON'T FOUL. Just like in real life.

But also just like in real life, sometimes the kids do it anyway?

But unlike in real life, we don't have the opportunity to choke their brains out a la Bobby knight

I appreciate the idea of choking their brains out....

...my point was...why would the player even be on defense in the back court when my settings are half court man to man.  That's what I'm trying to figure out.  If I played full court press...I get it.  But I'm not.  I don't even have full court press on when I'm losing late.

That's why I'm perplexed.  Why would their even be a chance of a foul if I'm not suppose to be playing D in the back court to begin with.

The other team was going quick shot, the defense might extend on that, it also might just be vocab error....the sim might assign all fouls in under 7 seconds to "the back court" but in "quick shot" the play may have all ready started by then.

its not real life. don't expect it to mirror real life.

Halfcourt Press/Man to Man

Summary
In this defense, teams will press until the ball crosses half-court and then will setup in a man to man defense.

IQ for the person that committed the foul on the press is C- . Maybe that had something to do with it? I agree though, it was a pretty dumb foul. Dumb players do dumb things.

Exactly.

But I was WINNING and therefore playing my regular man to man defense, NOT the Half Court Press if I were losing.  I checked my settings just to make sure.

Still baffled by this...but the "quick shot" explanation is as good as any....

I see. I thought when you said your settings were on half court man to man, thought you meant half court press man to man. My mistake then.

I wonder in certain situations where they play man to man in the backcourt? I know I had coached a real life team where we played man to man fullcourt.

If that's the case, they should probably let us know that!

No big deal.  Just frustrating to lose a game when up 5 and 20 seconds to go because of something that shouldn't happen.  But my team isn't very good anyway....
