.. and got screwed.  https://www.whatifsports.com/hd/GameResults/BoxScore.aspx?gid=12545562.
Don't know what I could of done differently. This is by far my best team. I had him beat in Def. and Ath, even in SP, BH, and P.  Beat very good teams this season and when it matters got nabbed by the RNG bullshit.  How can you work so hard all season, game plan every game and it gets thrown out the window in 1 game. Very discouraged

  • You do have absolutely 0 speed, thats where they killed you in the fouls
  • They also actually had the better bh/pas starting 5
  • You ran uptempo into a solid defense.
  • They had per shooting and you didn't so they were able to run a -3 and you ran a 0?
Honestly it's not the biggest surprise, sure it's an upset, but nothing out of the ordinary that screwed you.

As soon as I saw this score on the NT scoreboard, I knew there was a thread coming.

i remember seeing a similar thread when Florida Gulf Coast (15 seed) beat Georgetown in the first round, IRL a couple years back (2013?). Georgetown's coach complained about "being screwed" and the "random basket maker" always going against them.

What's the abbreviation "RNG" mean?

random number generator

I ran uptempo because they had no def. That is not a solid def squad, especially the back ups and guards. Now my def was solid with a 71 rating and better ATH plus with better IQ.  I should of blown them away at the foul line running FB.
They only avg 14 3's a game so that's why I ran 0, I could of ran +1, but I should of killed them on the boards.
As far as speed there should be no way Crites at 83 Ath, 75 SP, and 88 def fouls out
There best BH/P guard comes off the bench.
Just irritated

Opponent here, here's my take:
-I don't disagree that I'm an underdog for this game, your ath/def combo for your starters is really impressive for D2
-Saying we don't have any defense isn't really a fair take. Just because your defense rating on its own is elite doesn't mean mine isn't good as well.
-Our guards end up matching up okay because they're noticeably faster (which I'd argue is more important than ATH for those spots after a certain point) and had good enough defense
-You mention my bench but I went slowdown and was able to get about 30 minutes a piece from my starters...
-FWIW, best BH/P guard didn't start because you have a good and very high usage PG that he wouldn't guard well. Starting PG more than makes up for BH/P drop with ATH/SPD/DEF advantage
-You don't really shoot 3's and my rebounding was lower down low so it was kind of a no brainer to go with a big negative positioning and just double your PG when needed
-Comparing 1-on-1 matchups when I'm on offense, I made a point to attack Wilson with Boerger and Findley with Williams, FWIW
-If I was gameplanning against me for this game I don't think I'd go 0 for positioning
-It was very confusing having a Ralph Williams on both teams when reading this game

LOL about R. Williams.  You're right about any defense, I apologize, I meant compared to my def and take away your bigs, your guards def and ath is not as good as mine.  I don' think my PG should of fouled out either, but oh well. Yes the more I think about it the more I should of went +1 or +2, but I took into consideration that you only avg. 14 3's a game and my guards had good def ratings.
Funny thing is I was going to switch Wilson and Spiers from SF and SG, but was hesitant because of Wilson's poor BH and P at the SG position.
I went up tempo to try to get your bench in the game more and hopefully get your starters in foul trouble.
I tip my cap to you, it's better than losing to a SIM, but I was discouraged because this was my highest seeded team and best chance to get to elite 8, especially with the teams I beat during the regular season.

Terps, while some owners have done it consistently, it is much harder to make deep tournament runs with 1-dimensional teams like yours.  You might be gameplanning for every game all season, but the honest truth is that, especially at D2 and D3, a lot of coaches are pretty comfortable coasting until the postseason tournaments.  You got away with not facing as many -3/-4 defenses during the regular season because of that.  In the tournament you were gonna face them constantly.  Looking at your team, you just don't have enough offensive talent to overcome that for enough games in a row to make a deep tournament run.  Not that it would never happen, but it was definitely a longshot.  Your passing is also pretty poor, so that's not helping at all with offensive efficiency.

Thank you and undietaker for the honest answers.  I am going to make it a priority to get my P ratings up. Even though I only have 2 guys in the 70's in PER I had B FT ratings in 2-3 guys. I figured in FB FT rating meant as much as PER. I know LP was not there in my bigs, but in FB I try not to worry about LP in my bigs, just DEF, REB, ATH and BLK.  I was thinking 2 PER guys, 2-3 B FT guys and stack up on Def I could get away with it.  Was looking ATH/DEF, but forgot SP is important in FB to get to the line. If I had 5 Crites than all would of been pretty good.

Regarding your point about running uptempo to get to my bench, I'd be interested to hear from the others about if that's effective. Based on this game at least, I'd imagine that tempo setting affects your own team for fatigue much more than the other team.

Thanks for the kind words, I like your team setup and Findley looks like he could be a beast for you next season if he has any ATH and LP left in the tank. Have you considered running press? There are maybe 5 teams that can boast a comparable ATH/DEF combo to yours, I feel like that would be a good system for you if your rosters typically look like this one.

From what I read on the forums up tempo only affects your team's fatigue. I was trying to get more possessions out of the game. 3 key factors I look into running up tempo: 1) My upperclassmen and IQ compared to my opponent (check), 2) Def  ratings compared to my opponent (check), and 3) ST of both teams.  That's why I thought running up tempo was the way to go. Like dahs said I didn't have enough off fire power. I thought with my FT ratings and 2 ok PER guys I would have enough and my def would be shut down to win into the elite 8.  Going minus against me helped eliminate me driving to the basket and getting to the FT line. I usually kill people at the line.  That's how I won this year.

try being #1 seed and losing. This was one of my best rosters ever.
