D1 Recruiting Tips Topic

Hey guys I just moved back up to D1, Duquesne in Knight, and it has been a while. What are the main differences with D1 recruiting and are there any general tips? I've got 7 open scholarships so I have the chance to bring in some guys right away. Thanks!

D- prestige limits you to guys around #65 rank, 60-75 may have to be pulled down.

at d- look for guys that have
  • low we you can start right away
  • ineligible
  • low cores but high+ potentials.

in a situation like that I think you treat it as advanced D2. You want to pull down the best players who will talk to you. Figure out where that is, but I'm not sure if guys with stars will even. If so, 1, maybe 2 if they are close? But maybe none.

But now you get to do pull and drop downs with D1 money. So that's fun.

You conference is almost empty. Play to beat the other human in the CT for the auto bid. Raise your prestige by winning the CT and getting that NT a couple times, then you will have to start recruiting like D1 to advance...

What are the advantages of ineligibles? Since I moved up to D2 (and eventually D1) I've completely ignored ineligbles because of the risk of them never even playing for you. Just learned this season that they would qualify for a 5th year if they have a cumulative 2.7 GPA from a SIM AI recruit. How likely is a ineligble recruit to stay with your team after the first year? And what do the stars mean at the top of the recruit's profile?

Would definitely recommend you read this post, especially tkimble's advice:

The benefit of an ineligible is you get an extra off season of improvement. If they make to campus then they will stay 5 years assuming their gpa is 2.7 after their 4th year (d1only). So they will automatically stay with any gpa their first 4 years.

Recruit the best guys you can find and you don't have to stay local. Go where the best guys are.

and since a lot of teams avoid ineligibles you can get really good talent with little competition or guys who would be big 6 players if they hadn't been ineligible.

Not really though because the first season they do not improve

they improve over the offseason however which is what he said.

Fair point, but you have no option to redshirt. Its all about priorities.

I'm going to kind of take over this thread, I'm in the same situation, I just got to D1 Knight Elon(D prestige), it's my first time ever at D1 and I have only 3 openings which is probably a good thing because I will be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. My question is, is it better to recruit early or late at low D1?

I like to wait awhile. It gives you a chance to figure out who likes who. I normally don't put effort other than phone calls in until after the wots Comes out.

I think it's kind of in-between monster.... You can't go too late because almost always good to decent players will be 'taken'. Generally I think you try to identify good players for your level after each of the first few cycles and attack accordingly. If you go early enough and find some guys inside the 360 mile range that seem to be at your level (i.e. a battle you can win or no one is on the guy yet) jump on him and see if you can hang on.

If you really like the guy and he's close and no one has touched him for a few cycles then you might have a chance to hang on if you get him "very tight" with your school (hopefully scaring other coaches off him). This will take 15-20 HVs generally speaking (although it might vary with prestige?).

If you go too early you may find yourself spending a couple thousand or worse on guys that will get sniped from you later.

Things that seem to get low D1 schools in trouble - picking a battle they can never win and spreading themselves too thin (if you have 6 guys considering you and 3 open spots, you are just asking for trouble if another school likes a player on your considering list). Recruiting with D prestige in a small $$ conference is going to require picking at the left overs. You may even find yourself in a battle with D2 every now and then. I know I also found a few jucos at low levels that I redshirted to get 3 years out them. So that might work too - but you have to 'buy' the redshirt during recruiting for sure.

I also have a few lucky bounces at times with internationals. There seems to be mixed results with battles from my experience at international level - they do happen but a little harder to predict. That's one area you might be able to get lucky and find a gem and not have much of a battle (but it's risky since scouting is so expensive - and I'm not talking about 3-5 star guys).

Is there any shot at a player with a top 50 pos ranking and no stars within 100 or 150 miles?

How high can I as a D prestige look to recruit immediately and how high to look for drop downs?
