WIS journey thus far... Topic

Up to this point in my career I feel I have learned a bit about each aspect of the game. I believe I've learned the most about recruiting and have been happy with my recruits so far with a small hick-up here and there. I guess where I would really like to grow more in the game is game planning. Three scenarios:

1. You're home, playing a press team with terrible defense but decent stamina 2 or 3 wing players shooting 40+ % and average LP players (maybe 3 or 4 guys between 60-69 LP). The team has below average RB (around 33-38 avg). The team normally runs a normal tempo with a tendency to play -5 or +5 settings. With your respective teams in mind how would you coach this game?

2. You're away, playing a MTM team with avg defense ( 40-50 avg). The team has great RB two front court players with 95  RB ( 50 avg) and tends to run uptempo with a 75 avg stamina. This team has 2 guards with 60 and 65 Per and has an avg LP of 45 across the board with 2 players around 55. The teams ATH is fairly low avg. around 40. Maybe one superior ath on the team. With your respective teams in mind how would you coach this game?

3. You're home again, playing a zone team with great defense, RB, ATH, and stamina (RB 55, Stamina 80, ATH 65, Def 65. SB 40) The team has 3 great PER shooters shooting 45% + but not much LP averaging 45 with one player at 70 LP. The team has run uptempo since the start of the season. How would you call this game?

If I've left out any details you would normally use to GP please add it to the thread and I will input the category in the scenario. Thanks.

You've left out virtually ALL the details I would use for gameplanning.  If you're gameplanning based on team averages, to quote Mr. Mom, "you're doing it wrong."  You have to gameplan based on the starters and big-minute backups and where they're playing.  I literally never look at team average for DEF or ATH or SPD because I don't care about that.  A D3 zone team could have 3 guards with 90 speed, 2 SFs with 60 speed, and 7 posts/walk-ons with an average of 10 speed.  That group of players will have a team average of 38 SPD and you'll come out calling them slow.  I'd call that team fast.  In the slowdown zone you can easily get those guards to play the lion's share of minutes at the 1 and 2 if not all of them, the SFs are quick, and in a D3 zone I really have minimal concern for the speed ratings of the posts.  The same applies to athleticism, defense, etc.  If 8 or 9 guys get most of the minutes only their ATH ratings matter.  Against man in particular you have to look at each individual starter separately and say "this is a guy I can attack" or "this is a guy I need to avoid" and adjust your starters' distro accordingly.  And team REB works much the same way as speed - REB in guards is so very unimportant that your zone team's team REB is almost completely irrelevant.  If they've got 3 guys with 90+ and decent athleticism and a half-decent rebounding SF they're a good-rebounding zone team, but that doesn't necessarily have to reflect in the team average if they carry a lot of guards or have a walk-on or 2.  But listing team average LP is really the most silly.  One guy with 90+ LP is a dominant inside scorer.  Two guys with 60 are solid.  A whole team of guys with 40 will need some guards with speed, ATH, and BH or a lot of PER to score but might have a much higher team average.

Finally, while you did say "with your respective teams in mind," but a lot of us have more than one team and gameplanning is extraordinarily team specific.  It's also highly system specific.

Thanks for your input.

So would you say u adjust your distro on a game to game basis? I ask because I know different coaches do different things.

Just a few points...

1. I don't think I've ever even thought about gameplanning differently based on where the game is played.  Is there a reason for doing that?

2. I agree with dahs about looking at average ratings.  It's useless information.

3. I think if you don't at least look at distribution and/or depth chart adjustments each game, particularly against a man defense, you're not really gameplanning.

4. You should probably just post a link to your schedule and give us your password.

I kid!

1. I just figured that depending on the home court grade you have to expect a few things not to go your way.

2. When I listed the averages it was merely to gage the team. I don't actually game plan against averages especially teams with RS and walkons but for example most press teams run 12 man rotations so everyone gets time on the court.

3. I started out doing the game to game distribution adjustments but later on I read in a post I now can't remember that there are some coaches who look at distro at different points in the season rather than from game to game... For example around game 5 of OOC at the end of OOC and before the CT. Not sure how accurate this is from the post I read but it has the same setup.

4. Only if you can guarantee a NC for my teams!

red, i owe you a few favors. shoot me a sitemail, when you come upon a particularly interesting gameplan (to you), with your team. make sure to specify the opponent in case i don't see it within the 12 hours or whatever, so i can look back. i certainly owe you a few hours of game planning advice, but its best if i give you that advice relative to your real team and a real opponent. ill talk generally about your team and approach as well, and we can go from there. just let me know. shoot it to this ID.

With 727 wins and 19 NT bids in Phelan, it seems like rednation58 knows what he's doing!
