Does Low Post matter for guards or not?? Topic

I read this in the most recent developer's chat: (from 5/12/10) http://www.whatifsports.com/devchat/devchat.asp?chatid=86

"The description notes new player types, including perimeter big men and guards that live in the paint -- does this mean that low post will have actual relevance for guards now and no longer be a "throw away" stat category? (rednu - Prospect - 12:26 PM)

Yes, Low Post will be important now for all players. "

OK, so everything else I have read says that Low Post is irrelevent for guards, so you should completely ignore it and not waste time practicing it for players that are strictly guards.  But, according to this, the most recent engine now takes LP into account for guards (with no explanation of how this works in affecting scoring). So, what's the deal here?

Yes.  Low post is used for inside scoring ability among guards combined with the factors from the old engine.

I definitely did.

I had a PG that I recruited my first season before I really knew what ratings were important for what position who was carrying a 35 LP (he was actually the reason I asked the question in the development chat...I was going to cut him, but opted to keep him onboard for his final year when it sounded like the LP rating might have relevance). His ratings were pretty well maxed out by the end of his junior season, so he's made for a fairly good comparison for old vs. new engine performance. Under the old engine, I couldn't get him to score to save his life. I don't think he had 70 points all last season.

This year, he's suddenly become a scoring machine, averaging nearly 10 points per game. Since his ratings have barely budged from last year to this year and defenses in my conference are largely up across the board this season, I've been attributing his dramatic change in productivity to the new engine and the fact his LP rating finally has weight in the game.

Guards with high LP relative to their PE should also see things in the play-by-play like "X hits a hook shot in the lane," or "X shoot over his man from the left block," etc.

I agree with rednu, you can definitely observe the effect.  I have a DIII SG with ~50 ATH/70 SPD/40 LP/40 PE who I originally recruited for SF.  His JR year I moved him to PG as I had some decent SFs.  This year, first season with new engine he is still at PG but lighting it up, shooting 54% from the field.  He scores most of his point in the paint and draws a fair amount of fouls in the process.

Well, that explains a lot!

I'm annoyed now because I spent a lot of time reading through the Player's Guide and stickied posts on this forum at the beginning of the season, only to find out now, at the end, that I was given completely wrong information.  The admins ought to update the guides.  In fact, there ought to be some kind of new guide that alerts users to how the new engine operates in detail.

Well, perhaps someone on the board will make one.

if lp matters for guards, why do so many recruits have single digits for lp?

YOu have guards who just shoot and don't finish close to the basket.

Probably because they're guards rather than forwards or centers? Its no different than most of your centers having horrid perimeter ratings.

The whole point is that under the old engine, all other ratings being equal, it didn't matter if a guard had an LP rating of 1 or 99, because the category was a complete toss-out for all guards. The game didn't look at it (unless you played the player out of position in a PF or C slot...maybe the SF's position too, I can't remember the breakdown). But for most guards, it was a null category, which is why the players' guide stated that having guards practice LP was tossing away minutes.

Under the new engine that guard with an LP of 1 will perform markedly different than one with an LP rating of 99. That's what I mean when I say the category matters -- the engine actually USES it now. It plays a role in calculations for player performance that it didn't before. It isn't going to be a category that you specifically shop for in guards, but if you can find a recruit that fits your system who has a few points in the category, that player is worth an added look now that you didn't have to give them before.
