I'm finishing up my 3rd season with my D3 team. They run the full-court press defense and Triangle offense. I didn't change these when I took it over, but not that I'm thinking more about it, do these 2 pair up well at all? What is a good pairing with the press, or in general?

I've considered changing over the offense, but don't want to take the hit. I also was thinking I'd just leave it as is until I am (if I am) ready to try D2.

I don't think it's a good match.  The big advantage of the triangle offense is that it doesn't require as much speed and athleticism as other offenses.  Certain recruits like high-perimeter, good passing, but not uber-fast guards can be much more successful in the triangle than other offensive schemes.  However, the press requires the most speed and athleticism of any defense, negating the advantage of the triangle.  I would change one or the other.

depends on what you want to do - if you plan on moving on in a season or two - if that is your goal - stay with it - plenty of teams succeed with that combo

on the other hand, if you want to be there for 10 seasons it may make sense to change, because of the point made about complementary skills

Personally, I just don't think there's nearly enough difference between triangle/flex/motion in HD to warrant a change. It would set your team back a season or two and I don't really think it would pay any kind of noticeable dividends.

So what should I be switching to? I'd guess fastbreak, but my guys are going to be tired.

Flex or motion, particularly flex, would be fine, too.

But seriously, unless you're 90% sure that you'll be spending 5+ seasons at this school, stick with triangle.

I won an NT at Maine in Allen w/ Triangle/press, and had some solid success at Marquette using those sets.  Generally I agree with girt - there isn't enough of a difference to justify punting the season or two to switch.

In general, I'd avoid the fastbreak like the plague.

I won three consecutive NCs in Tark D3 with triangle/press, albeit with the old engine just before the change. The ath/speed needed for press is a good thing for every offense, triangle included.

I've since switched to m2m for a variety of reasons, but triangle/press can still take you places.

FB is awesome at D3.  Its just a race to grab as many high ath/spd/stm guys as you can find.

triangle/press is awesome. i used to think it wasn't, but then i realized, i didn't know how to play triangle. fast guards excel, which is a key of the press as well. also, you can slant the distro hard without hurting yourself, which really lends itself to building a great defense all around with a few key offensive players. also, stamina seems to take slightly less stamina that other offenses, which is great for the press. now, with big men actually being worth a crap, they seem to be highly effective in the triangle as well. its sort of a jack of all trades offense IMO, you can go heavy in a couple different directions and remain highly successful. rails won 8 in 9 years running the triangle/press, so it has to be good, right? :)

That actually is semi-related to something I was thinking about the other day: Are there any coaches who had dynasty-type runs that didn't involve the press?

I'm about to get kicked out of the Allen NT by triangle/press.

I've always thought it was overrated when people would try to match specific D's and O's together, they can all work well together with the right players. However the press is terrible now without a roster full of studs so I would stay away from it.
