who cares?
Isn't this pretend game supposed to simulate something?  Peaking in a skill and then never having to practice to maintain that skill goes against reason.  I guess Redick just stopped taking jump shots his last 2 seasons at Duke, right?

Rails made a suggestion in the suggestion forum (a novel concept) about adding a category for allowing players to individually improve their IQ.  You get to a point when players are seniors where you just can't improve them in anything, so it'd be cool to have some categories to practice off/def IQ individually.

I wish that suggestion would have gotten more attention.

Not to mention that something so counter-intuitive won't occur to most people.  Unless a coach reads the forums, they are unlikely to know about this.

Do folks agree with wronoj -- only set to 0 after getting the email, but not when they're at "limited upside"?

Follow-up question -- if that's the case, what happens when they have an increase in the offseason, and now they're at "limited upside"?  How do I know they've truly maxed out, if there's never any email?

Yes, ONLY set to 0 when you get the e-mail from the assistant telling you you're wasting time putting SO much time in/unless you have other ideas I think I've got all I can out of/ etc. , NOT based on the first evaluation e-mail at the start of the year where it says limited potential. Limited potential areas do not equal maxed out areas.

Usually at the beginning of the year I set my practice plan like I would by position regardless to get time to the core skill areas...if I get an avalanche of assistant coach messages after the first exhibition game telling me stuff is maxed out in my upperclassmen, then I reappropriate accordingly. It's just a good safeguard in my book and missing one day's worth of improvement credit in an unmaxed skill by a few minutes shouldn't make or break a kid's career.

I didn't know there was a difference.  I thought once you got the e-mail the stat was maxed out.  Are there different e-mails??

yes. its either "thats all i can get" or "shouldnt we use extra time somewhere else"

which brings up this question, if you set a skill to 7 or 3 minutes, will the player still max out or just plateau? i can imagine they still improve from game experience, correct?

so if i get the 1st I can set to 0, if i get the 2nd, set to 7 or 3 depending on the stat?

I tried it, set PER to zero, and his rating immediately dropped a point. Weird.

you sure he was maxed out?

to be honest, I keep hoping people will not believe this - that way their players won't have practiced as much as mine...I answer honestly and everything, but I'm not gonna spend a long time arguing with folks about it. Believe it, or (even better for me) don't....

this is not how i would have answered the first question at all-- to me the 2 different emails are:

1) the "Player Thoughts" email you get at the beginning of the season that shows all players, and lists individually all skills that are not "average" potential, ie- all "limited" or "high" potential skills;

2) the individual emails you get about any player telling you they are capped out.

I get the first email, I cut most of the "limited"s to 7, sometimes leave at 10 if they're limited on tons of stuff.

I get the second email, I cut that specific skill to 0. Exceptions-- a) he's out of Defense, but not SB.  b) he's out of ATH/SPD/STA/DU, but not all of them. c) FT, i only go to 7 or 8.

Base it on the "maxed out" emails, not the "not so much time" emails
I'm not sure there is any difference between those two types of e-mails.

I've been spending extra time working with xxxxx on his perimeter game and unless you have any other ideas, that's all I can get from him.

Hey Coach, I think we could better utilize xxxxx EXTRA practice time by focusing on something other than his outside shot - he just doesn't seem to be making much more progress there.

Hey Coach, IMHO I think we could better utilize the EXTRA practice time we've been spending with xxxxx on something other passing - he just doesn't seem to be making much progress there.

Hey Coach, I was thinking that we could better utilize xxxxx EXTRA practice time by focusing on something other than low post moves - he just doesn't seem to be showing any significant improvement.

Is it just me or do you think that xxxxx has maxed out in terms of rebounding ability? I don't know, I just haven't seen much improvement. Maybe we should think about having him spend his extra practice time on something else?

Hey Coach, I'm not sure how much we're gaining by spending so much time working with xxxxx on free throw shooting. He just doesn't seem to be making much more progress there.

After continuing to work with xxxxx, what do you think about using that extra practice time to focus on something other than his low-post moves?

Hey Coach, just my 2 cents, but I think we could better utilize xxxxx extra practice time by focusing on something other than rebounding - he just doesn't seem to be making much more progress there.

Every one of the examples above says the same thing - the dude is MAXED out.
