Updated Team Comparison Spreadsheet Topic

For anyone who has been using my team comparison spreadsheet (a modified version of bermanap's original spreadsheet), you can get the latest version here:

Hoops Dynasty Downloads

The updated files are named:

HD-TeamMatchup-2007xlsm.zip
HD-TeamMatchup-2003xls.zip

This update modifies the Offensive and Defensive ratings and adds a Rebound Rating (based on REB, ATH, SPD) and a Ball Handling Rating (Based on BH, P, ATH, SPD).

It also modifies most of the "comment/help text" throughout the spreadsheet to be more detailed.

You can use either the 2003 (for excel 2003 or earlier) or the 2007 file for excel 2007 or excel 2010.

There is a help file named TeamMatchup.doc that explains how to use the spreadsheet in the same folder listed above.

Cheers, hughesjr.  I'm a big fan of spreadsheets.  I've been alternating between using them with some teams and not other, with interesting results.

No, it will not work in OOo.  Pulling in external links as well as the macro language are both significantly different in the OpenOffice.org Calc application.

But, I am a Linux developer and I should be doing things in open source software , so let me see if I can make it work in OpenOffice too.

OK, I have just uploaded a file called TeamWorksheet.ods which is an OpenOffice 3.2 Calc spreadsheet for those who use OpenOffice.

do you have the formulas for offensive and defensive ratings in the spread sheet? that would be pretty interesting, i used to use a program i wrote to evaluate players in bulk and the most enjoyable part was coming up with all the ranking formulas. i too broke it down into offense, defense, and rebounding, along with a couple others.

also, btw, seble has said that in the new engine, spd is not a part of rebounding (isn't that ridiculous?)

Thanks man.  May not have time to try it out very much for a few days but I'll let you know if I find any bugs when I have time to play around with it.  Not that I'm not sure you haven't already checked...

Yes, there are rating factors for each position included in the spreadsheet.  (In the Excel spreadsheet they are on the Lineup worksheet ... in the OpenOffice.org spreadsheet there is a worksheet called "Ranking Factors".

WRT no speed for Rebounding ... that is silly.  But, they don't consult me on engine changes, so it is what it is I guess

Actually, the OpenOffice spreadsheet is fairly complicated as Excel handles pulling in external data via HTTP much better than OOo.  There are several workarounds programmed using Basic to do things that Excel just does automatically.

Also, OpenOffice.org has an issue when removing one set of external data and replacing it with another URL (like when you change to a new team and have a new TeamID) ... it deletes the entire Range (instead of just clearing it) so that any external formulas pointing to that range directly get confused.  This deleting of cells instead of just clearing the cells also screws up Named Ranges ... so I have to copy the data pulled down to another worksheet after a team change or after an opponent change.  Since there are now secondary worksheets involved, I also then had to create a subroutine to sync info to secondary worksheets (via a copy instead of a link) for every refresh of info from the web.

Anyway, the OOo sheet is not as polished as the Excel sheet, but it has more functionality and it works on my Linux workstation (which I use much more than my Windows workstation), so that is the one that gets the most attention.
