Well, there is some variability also programmed into the decision making process. Not every school is a match for Bobby Knight or John Calipari. The variability sometimes denies some coaches for some jobs randomly ... at least that is my understanding. So, just because a coach does not get a job, it does not mean he is not qualified (or even mean he is not the most qualified). If the FAQ and devchats are to be believed, the variability is added for enjoyment and to sometimes give a longshot a chance.
exactly when did this variability get programmed into the game? Reference the source please, even your guess as to when you thought you heard this.
As far as I know, this is not a true statement.
The FAQ does say " Each school will have different requirements in each category (for example College X may hire a coach with a poor reputation whereas College Y would not)" and there is an old dev chat that mentions this with regards to reputation specifically.
The FAQ also says that "The agent does not know what each school is looking for in each specific category - he only knows, in total, whether there could be a match between your resume and the schools' needs." so that in theory, you could be listed as qualified but be rejected when you apply. I'm not sure how often that has ever happened - I think that if that did happen, I would remember the big ruckus that would have overtaken the forums. I also don't know if this is random, or they applied some logic - UNLV/Memphis/SMU, etc are more lenient, the Ivy league schools are the strictest, etc.
And of course, 3 questions after this in the FAQ is the question "What's the deal with discipline?" so it could be completely outdated.
