Play-by-Play logic, how did this possibly happen? Topic

00:01   83-83 Gerald Drye steals the ball from Brad Barnes
00:00 Gerald Drye lays it up and in 85-83

I lost the game on a steal and a lay-up. Ok, that's fine, but how in the world did the guy get down the court in one second? Seriously, I don't see that happening EVER, so I'm confused by how the play-by-play worksin that situation.

Are you certain that Barnes didn't turn the ball over in the backcourt?
11/20/2010 12:49 PM
Probably actually stole it off the inbound...  In which case, yes, I have seen that.
11/20/2010 1:39 PM
Hmmm, nevermind.  Timing makes that impossible.  I think a lot of people worry too much about the PBP.  It's mostly just window dressing anyway.

"...stolen by Bird, who passes underneath to D.J. who lays it in..."

Granted, even all that took longer than a second...major league suckout you got hosed by atrain

Yes. His team got the ball back with 29 seconds left, and the other team stole the ball from him with one second left and then somehow made a lay-up.

atrain, did you send a ticket on this? End-of-game logic is definitely screwy, I see many examples like this.

dahs, this is more than just "window dressing" in this example. This is totally devoid of logic.

I didn't send a ticket yet, but I will. Dahs, I understand that it may just be a window dressing, but, as girt said, if I'm reading through the PBP and I see that I lost because of an illogical play that could not ever occur, it takes away from my experience as an HD coach. I want to visualize my team playing while I read it, and this kind of ruins that experience. Why even have a play-by-play if what happens in it is impossible?

maybe a reach, but with the limited pbp it's not totally unreasonable

loose ball gets batted into the backcourt, dude chases it down with just under 2 seconds left and he puts it up and in

This is a possible explanation. I think we all read steal and it's assumed he picked it clean, it could be that some steals are those were this scenario plays out it's knocked away, batted around for a couple of seconds gets into the backcourt someone picks it up and lays it in. It's tough to believe but I rather believe this scenario than believing every steal is a clean steal.

Yeah, I actually enjoy reading the PBP, this is the first time something didn't make sense to me, but it doesn't really matter all that much, I'd just like to see the PBPs be a bit more realistic in these kind of situations. Or at least more descriptive of steals.

It's particularly the end-of-game pbp that needs a good bit of work. No one likes seeing their game get decided in the final few seconds on something ridiculous, and that happens relatively frequently.

Agreed.

What about this pbp at the end of the game, in a tied game?

00:06   79-79 Leslie Eberhard connects on the shot in the lane on a great pass from Andrew Bayles
Springfield is playing a spread offense (hold ball) and a man to man (-3)   Cabrini is playing a motion offense (uptempo) and a man to man (+3)
Springfield is playing a quick shot offense (quick shot) and a man to man (-3)   Cabrini is playing a motion offense (uptempo) and a man to man (+3)
00:00 Ryan Perry is called for the reach on Donald Schuyler - foul #3 on Ryan Perry, team foul #9 79-79
00:00 Donald Schuyler makes the 1st free throw 80-79
00:00 Donald Schuyler makes the 2nd free throw 81-79

A reach-in foul called in a tied game with 0 seconds left? Why would they be fouling? Understandably this could happen, i.e. it's not an impossible play like the previous example above, but just another example that stuff like this needs another look.

Also, I was actually on the winning end of this game, but it just feels like a cheap win over my biggest conf rival. Obviously would have rather had a clean win.

Thoughts?

Yeah that seems odd that there was a reach-in called in this situation, but if I were you I wouldn't be complaining too much haha
11/21/2010 7:51 PM
ryan, I don't take that to be nearly as egregious as atrain's. On that play I envision a player getting fouled or bumped just before getting a shot off, maybe as he's driving, etc. I agree that it's not great logically, and that that sort of thing happens more than it should in HD, but I don't consider it as truly rotten as atrain's and some of the others I see. Just my opinion though. (I have a feeling if I lost on that play I might not be as generous, lol.)

Again, I strongly encourage both of you to send tickets to bring this to seble's attention, the more he sees that end-of-game logic is bad, the better the chance it will be fixed.
