also how good of D2 recruits can i get?
1/24/2011 6:05 PM
honestly, really hard to tell which player is good or not w/o seeing potential. as someone said earlier, do a quick look at some of the top d3 programs and see what kind of players they have on their team. that will it much easier.

okay thanks

did you use fss, future star scouting? scout out the states near you. i generally start with states within 200miles, but i also do some filtering before scouting so if a state with 200 miles only has 2 players that meet my  initial criteria but costs 1k to scout, i generally will pass on it.

yea i just did that. now i got potentials but i think i got a general idea now, thanks again and hopefully i have a successful season

I would take a look at the perenially successful DIII teams in your world, and see what type/level of players they're recruiting, what categories they seem to target for each position, etc. I'd also sitemail a few of those successful coaches to pick their brains.

In general, you should focus on the ratings and potential in the key categories for each position, and not pay too much attention to a player's overall rating.
i only read the first page, but this is the best advice i saw (although there was plenty of good advice). the key to early recruiting is, focus on the key areas, and ignore the others (key areas: pg - ath spd def bh pass. sg - ath spd def per bh pass. sf - mix between sg and pf depends on type. pf - ath reb def, c - ath reb def lp. on the bigs, blk is sort of important, but the reason i list lp for only one is, you should value lp a lot higher in your primary big than your secondary big when it comes to scoring. so whether its your pf or c isn't as important. also, stamina matters, you want around 70 or higher for everyone, unless you are playing the press or fb, then you need 80 or higher).

the reason the above is such good advice though is, because it includes an approach you should use throughout your entire career. look at the most successful teams around, and see what they are doing. this can give you ideas on every aspect of the game.

as a rookie, you can just look at the kinds of players on A prestige teams, and that gives you a good idea what is important and what is not.

at the next level, you can look at the performance of other teams, and try to figure out why they were successful, what made them so good, and use these ideas to build your own team. this pretty much never stops being beneficial - i have won 18 titles and i still do this regularly, and learn regularly from it.

you can watch a great coach recruit. watch his every move. even send him a sitemail if you have questions, people are pretty helpful around here. this will give you ideas on how to recruit. i watched lostmyth recruit one season about 5 months ago at d1, despite having a great d1 track record, i became a dramatically better recruiter overnight (ok, over a couple nights, as recruiting is a couple days long :)

i just think not enough people take the time to study other teams and other coaches, maybe they don't want to and that's fine. but if you really want to learn new things, it is always a fantastic place to go. so are the forums.

yes, in d3, you can ignore ineligibleness completely. it is displayed there but it doesn't mean anything until d2. but just to make sure i am not misleading you - if your own player fails out due to grades, he won't be able to play. incoming ineligible players will be able to play.

its really hard to say - there is no formula you can use. just send a single phone call to everybody you are interested in, and they will tell you if they are open to your efforts or not. generally speaking, the higher rated the player, the less likely he is to talk to you, but there are tons of exceptions so use that with caution. but if your prestige is not that good, you will find that say all players rated over 500 won't talk to you so you might not want to waste your time (unless they are in 70 miles - always spend the 10 dollars on a player you like within 70 miles, no matter how unlikely you think he is, because they work a lot differently than players outside 70 miles).

one last thing, always make sure you get potential before signing players. it is critical to being a successful coach. if you are wondering how much a player will grow based on potential, its,
low - 0-5
med - 6-20
high - 21+

caveat - in your player thoughts message, med is 6-19, high is 20+, there is some bug that makes it inconsistent with what you see on the recruiting search page.

thank you for all the help, this should get me pretty far until i have another question;)

Of the players you posted the ratings for, the only one I like is the Center up at the top of this page. He's the only one with decent ratings.
1/25/2011 1:21 AM
that center didn't look bad if he's got good potentials...

here's my advice - wait 24 hours... then give a call to every DII guy you can find within 200 miles...

the ones who give you backup messages save - the ones who don't forget about...

then wait some more... sooner or later they will send you another message that indicates you can recruit them...

then pick out the ones you want and have at it... remember WE and potentials are important... Many people here swear by ATH/speed/DEF over everything else, including things like PE and LP.
