What does this message mean?

"Thanks for the call coach, but I think my answer is 'no' unless you have something else I haven't heard yet."

I am a D2 coach and I am trying to recruit a D1 player.

I assume this message means he won't drop down to me.  But I'm confused by the fact that the player is considering another D2 school with worse prestige than mine.  And the other D2 school is not within 70 miles of the recruit.

I'm not actually sure. What I would do is call his coach and see if you get a more obvious answer that way

+1, not recruitable.

How far away is that team?

But how is this player considering the worse school?

Without giving away too much the other school is between 200-500 miles away.

Oh and this player is freshman so couldn't have been recruited in a previous season.

He's looking for the "gravy" as in he's holding out to see who throws the most "goodies" his way (as in playing time, promised start, etc.. He's what you call a fence rider and is probably telling everyone else the same thing. I'e. he's a spoiled rich kid or he's from the inner city and is looking to be the next "Bling" player. He's what I would call a 50/50 guy, but it's a matter of just how much money you want to spend on this guy. He "Won't" be cheap.

so court, you're saying that despite the initial "no" response to the phone call, he can still be pulled down? That is contrary to everything I've learned about pull-downs...?

It's a (half-a-no) answer the way I read that message. I'm not reading it as a 100% no answer. The recruit states right in the return phone call that "unless you have something I haven't heard yet", meaning to me, that there is the possibility that beachedwhale hasn't gone through all the recruiting efforts yet, as in he has only done a follow-up phone call. But without seeing or knowing the complete recruiting effort, I can't say for certain. To me he's asking for playing time or to be a starter that beachedwhale hasn't offered yet. At least that 's how it reads to me.

My first thought about what that email means is that it means spend another $10 and get another message.   But if he's considering a lower prestige school, it's pretty obvious that he's attainable to you--you'll have to evaluate your chances against the other school.  You're reading way too much into it.

is the player within 70 miles of you? sounds like to me he will already take your credit - the above message is neither a "yes" nor "no" answer from a potential pulldown. so the only conclusion i can reach is he must be within 70 miles and is already willing to take your visits.

i dont really think these kinds of messages you describe exist... i could be wrong, but i really don't think they do.

Sounds to me like he could be a pull down. I got a similar message after he started considering another school it just means you got to spend even more to sell him on the program.
