Some people have been trained to believe if you brag about your own accomplishments it's some kind of dick thing to do. I think that line of thinking is retarded because if you aren't allowed to be proud of your own accomplishments AND show that you are proud of them then what's the point of having goals?
So, according to you, humility is retarded. You know what I think is retarded?...Bragging about video game accomplishments. If they are worthy, others will take note and recognize them for you.
It's retarded to assume that anybody who isn't humble is a dick. We pay to play this game, we play this game because we enjoy it and because we want to do well at it, what's wrong with bragging about it to the people who are also playing the game? It's not like Jones is over here bragging about how good of an HD team he put together to a real basketball coach, he's saying to people who are trying to accomplish the smae thing. On top of that he's not being a dick about it and saying "I'm a better coach than you, so you can't disagree with me" all he's doing is being proud of a team he put together. Is it really wrong to be proud of something you accomplished?

Bragging about your own accomplishments is cheesy and smacks of "Look at me, look at me, someone please validate me so I can feel better about myself".  It's like giving yourself a nickname........just lame.

I disagree so much with that sentiment emy. I think it's fairly ridiculous to say that it's wrong to show that you are proud of something that you've accomplished. I just can't comprehend why people have been programmed to believe that whenever you accomplish something you should act like it's no big deal. If you are proud of what you have done then say you are proud of it but don't be a dick about it and I don't feel jones has acted like a dick in anyway, he's simply proud of the team he put together and the season he had and thinks it may be the best D3 team in the new engine. He hasn't come out and said "you guys suck and can't build a team this good, haha." All he's said is I just had a great season with a great team and I think it may be the best do you agree?

I'm as confident a person as there is, and couldn't care less about others approval but if I accomplish something that is rare I'm going to let people know as long as it's something they care about. In this case an undefeated season (1st time it had been done in Phelan D3) and winning every NT game by double digits qualifies as something rare and he's talking about it to people who play the same game most of whom have never accomplished this so they understand it's tough to do.

For example let's say you play in a basketball league you go out and set the single game scoring record, is it wrong for you to tell your friends who also play basketball that you set a record or are you supposed to say nothing about it and treat it as one of those things that if they hear about they hear about it if not you'll pretend it meant nothing to you?

i can see both sides here. proclaiming your own team the best ever might be a bit much, i can relate to that. but in principle, i have 0 problem with jones making a post like this. in all honesty, i wish more people would do it, and that has been true for my entire coaching career. why? because i like this game and want to know the cool **** people are accomplishing. much of that probably goes unnoticed, and thats a shame. you don't have to have the greatest run of all time for it to be interesting, at least IMO, i would like to know when people are pulling off back 2 backs or have a 35-0 season, or when they are putting together a great run with a particular system. its a good way to keep a pulse on what works and what doesn't. if there are 5 guys winning back to backs with man and 0 with zone, i really would be interested to know that. its just simply interesting to me - doesn't even have to be a championship, could be anything really, anything out of the ordinary. if people don't have any interest in hearing about this kind of stuff.... why not simply ignore it?

You don't see the difference between justifiable pride and declaring something you did "the greatest ever"?

There is a fine line between unmitigated cockiness and warranted pride.  aejones may have just been screwing around, and I'm sure he's a good guy, but self-proclaiming greatness (let alone being the best ever at something) is never a classy move, in my opinion.  If you're the best ever, people realize it, and there's no need to affirmatively state it.

i don't know if this is true... the above examples people are bringing up as potentially better teams than jones's... i've never heard of or seen anything about any of them, except the one in tark. i don't remember seeing a thread on the forums by anybody specifically to let people know about narcotico's great run in d3, or uglyskunks. sure i haven't read every thread, but i read pretty damn many of them. so i think it is wrong to say, if you do something great, people will notice on their own. well sure, some people will, but will they let other people know? i want to know about these things, without having to have a team in every world so i can watch for them. nobody else said anything about jones's 35-0 run - how else would we know about it, if he didn't say it himself?

"how else would we know about it, if he didn't say it himself?"

That's fine.  I understand that, and don't have a problem with the thread per se.

But again, there's a difference between, "hey, look at these awesome accomplishments," and "I'm the best ever."

Is my D3 team.  It would be a decent game.  Your center vs. mine would be a good matchup too.  And my team isn't even in the top 50 all time.

Ath 82 v 62
Spd 18 v 30
Reb 98 v 96
Def 81 v 69
Blk 93 v 98
LP 81 v 94
Per 1 v 3
BH 1 v 1
Pa 1 v 23
Stm 76 v 73
FT B v C+

But my center is a junior, so maybe next year.  Very good team, but not the greatest of all time.
Agreed.  And for the record I didn't put my team out there to say it was better than Jones, just that it seemed to be in the same ballpark, and given 10 games, we might win 3.

But I'll check back with this thread in about 45 days.  My team only loses 1 starter, and that center I put up vs. Jones top player was a junior who isn't tapped out in anything except rebounding/shot blocking.

And we still won't be the best team ever.  Rails in Allen won like  5 D3 NTs in 6 years or something.  THAT team is my best ever.

Truthfully, I think it's a great deal of fun for there to be threads on "Best D2/D3 Team Ever" or "Best D2/D3 Player Ever" ... I LOVE looking at some guys and being like "HOLY CRAPOLA THAT GUY SIGNED HIM TO PLAY IN DEE THREE W.T.F.?!"

I agree with this, but hey Jones goes about things differently. I also think a bit of what Jones says is tongue in cheek and gets a kick out of people snapping at him. We actually talk on AIM and he talks trash to me and I talk trash back (It's going to have to be considerably less now since he's won 3 titles since I won my 1st) but we never get offended it's all in fun.

I just don't like or get the opinion that you aren't allowed to speak about your own accomplishments.

Nobody said you're not "allowed" to do it, and I think you're the only one who said anything about someone being a "dick" when they do it. It's really not a big deal, but I am not alone when I say I find it odd. You never hear lostmyth talk about his accomplishments (he just had 8 players drafted from his St. Bonaventure team, including 6 in the 1st round, after his latest NT), but somehow people know about them. To each his own I guess.

In the early years, a coach discovered a glitch where he could recruit DI players for his DIII team.  It was blowout after blowout..the most dominant DIII team I've seen
