DI C- prestige school. Have a chance at a 4 star? Topic

The guy says I am his childhood favorite. I plan on putting 90K, a start, and 30 min PT on him. He is very close to me.

i am skeptical that he will talk to you, its definitely going to be tough. i personally would recommend going another direction - if its a high quality 4 star, you probably can't win him even spending the entirety of your 6 man budget. and then what about the rest of your class? also, if you do go this route, stick with 20-25m not 30 - its not going to make a difference in signing him or not.

I like your strategy, and you could maybe get him...but I don't think it's a good risk/reward scenario for you.  That C- will be just too inviting for better schools to battle you.  And if you miss out on him, what are you left with then?  Even if you get him, what about the other pieces around him.  If you're dead set on going after him, I'd do one of the following:

1. Start with 35k into him.  If you see an A-school on him from the start, I think you're in trouble and may want to reconsider your all-in approach.

2. Start with 50-60k and cross your fingers you don't need to spend the other 30-40k.

The money you hold back upfront can always be earmarked for this guy if you're dead set on battling, but keep a reserve in case you want to change course or you see some other desirable kids you want to go after.

Also, don't go w/30 mins.  In case you get him, you  will likely have problems getting him those minutes.  You could probably accomplish your goal just as well with 15 or 20 mins.

If you follow through with this, update this thread.  I'm curious to see how this strategy goes for you.  If there's no update, I'll just assume you swung and missed on him  ;)

One thing you have going for you is it looks like the other local teams aren't that much better prestige wise.  Not even very many A range schools nearby, but still dangerous with all the money the ACC is going to have.

Yes it is. If I decide to go after him the strategy will be 90K minimum. I have some left over from last season because I didnt have to recruit anyone. I will still be getting playoff money for this season. If I take 5 walkons I can recruit the other pieces around him next season.  If I take 6 walkons I can just start rebuilding next season. Its alot to consider. I wouldnt worry about him, but I think being his childhood favorite gives me a little edge. I would hate to waste that edge and I would hate to wonder what might have been. Yet, that edge could just be an enticement that I should overlook.

Honestly, it's hard for me to imagine that sinking basically your whole recruiting budget into one four-star player would be worthwhile. Even if you signed him, I truly think that it would end up as more of a negative than a positive for your program.

i agree with girt. whats the point of having one awesome player and a whole bunch of walk ons? does that make losing better?

This part right here, "If I take 5 walkons I can recruit the other pieces around him next season", is awesome.  Especially after he goes EE after his freshman or sophmore season.

In the grand scheme of a recruiting battle between a C- school and anyone B or better, childhood favorite is essentially worthless.  Also, don't forget that having more than 2 walkons makes your practices less effective.

I really hope you get him but would take the advice of the folks above that have been to the rodeo a few times and ease into it without the 90k plunge.  Keep in mind that at the same distance even an A- school would only need to spend about 40k to be even with you if you spent 90k.  An A+ school would only need to spend about 30k - which is like one years' worth of tourney money for a Big 6 conference.  And with your C- prestige your promises of starts and minutes aren't worth much at all.

Super dangerous.  Assuming a level of prestige is 1.75 multiplier (rough guess) then a A- team will be worth 2.5 x yours and a A team maybe 2.8.

Divide $90k by 2.5-2.8 and you get $32-36k.

As the coach of a A- school, would I pay $32k for a player?  Sure, done so many many times, (3 guys in past 2 seasons where that much or more) and I would expect (and be wrong) that you would bail long before I had to spend more than $20k....which might be a mistake, but you are going to be a bit irrational if you battle a A school hard for someone where the A school picks the fight.  If the A school is in trouble, then you got a good shot.

Big time NT money can be $15-40k extra.  Don't know in your world what ACC/Big East gets, but I bet its a lot.

BTW, I think its worth noting that either this stuff is increasing in frequency or I've been unlucky lately.  In both Allen and Phelan I've had lower prestige teams from mid-major conferences battle my B+ and A+ prestige teams from Big 6 conferences for players.  In both cases the coaches didn't have either a distance or schol # advantage.

And, as frustrating as it is to have to spend a lot more money than would seem to make sense for these recruits, I can't say I blame the mid-majors with the old recruit generation.  It'll be interesting to see what happens going forward.

D+ school recruited four star yesterday in Crum.

i wonder if this post itself is ethical. i really don't like that your telling everyone your recruiting strategy. i could see this as a way of detering other teams from this player. you basically identified the player, gave his quality and distance and anyone with interest will have to believe that your going to pore 90k into him, when in fact you might only have to put enough to show that he is very tight with you.

i'm sure you didn't intend to use this thread as a recruiting strategy, but nevertheless you have.

skunk, that was the part about the post I admired the most

skunk. I considered that before I posted. I realized that I wanted some advice regardless of the revelation of my strategy. It is what it is. Im really not worried about it either way.

its a positive for you either way, so of course your not worried about it. this is a possible issue for the other coaches.
