Pulldown Danger Zone? Topic

Where would you say the danger zone is for an A- D3 school to pulldown a recruit? As in, how many miles is it before I would really be taking a risk to attempt to pulldown a prospect.

200, 250, 300, etc?

I go out to 350. Just make sure you stay under the breakpoint for the cost jump.

There is always a risk from other schools, but if you really want the player it doesn't matter how far away they are.

Ah... but you are strong with the force recruiting master, we are all not so skilled

Weena's correct on 350 imo, and that isn't an arbitrary # he picked, it's because costs spike if you go farther. I agree w. him, it's more about cost than actual risk. Risk is basically impossible to ascertain and is more about luck than anything else. (There's literally zero difference between, say, 220 miles and 320 miles.)

I don't normally search beyond 300 to be honest

i agree on the 350 thing. but sometimes, you just happen to find that one recruit you really want who is expensive as ****. i say go for him anyway! sure, most likely, some son of a ***** from a higher division will steal them. but, once you track down said person and kill them in their sleep, you will feel better. so, go for it...

Speaking of someone from a higher division taking somebody, that just happened to one of my targets. Is the whole thing just out of my hands right now that I am not going to win? Should I just pass on him (luckily, I do have a backup option I am looking at)?

Funny that I have been to the second round of the tourney the past two seasons and I still no almost nothing about pulldowns. I'm like a combination of a newbie and a vet.

I've been given to understand that you cannot win a battle with a school in a higher division, generally speaking.  I think if I were you, I'd cut my losses - but that's just my opinion.  I'm sure a genius or two around here has probably done it :)

I have been collecting posts and sitemails on pulldowns for a while now, and at the urging of dacj501 I formatted it into a Word document.  Dac posted it on Google docs.  It's nothing new, and certainly nothing set in stone, but it might help you a bit with pulldowns.  If anyone sees something they disagree with I'd appreciate hearing about it:   docs.google.com/document/d/19PzKVXrYTREYv4MPOAERBIZVOJPRyCLLINrO_EDj-o4/edit

I'm starting a new D3 program tomorrow after a 1-season stab 5 years ago.  So tomorrow I'll find out if pulldowns at D3 are a good idea or not :)

vandy/ethan - battles up a division are definitely not out of the question. its not just a genius or two who has done it either, people win up a division all the time. ok, less than the guys up a division win :) but still. i would say i have, in my entire d2/d3, battled up a division at least once every 3 seasons. i probably have won 90% in the last couple years. so its very possible - you just have to pick your battles carefully. only battle if you can win, or, if the guy is so good you just don't care, and think its worth the risk of losing for the chance of winning.

this, of course, begs the question - how do you know you can win up a division? well, in d2 vs d3, money is not much different, so its often possible. by counting scholarships and distance, you can often get a good gauge. but, the most important thing is - what do you think of the other coach? i rarely battle a coach i expect to make the right move. i usually am stealing players off of guys who clearly don't know what they are doing - i mean, if they did know, would a guy with a huge prestige advantage and 15K per scholarship to your 5k every lose? no. well, sometimes. but usually no.

i recommend, as always, experimenting. only one way to learn! well thats not true... but there is no substitute for experience. i sure lost a lot of these battle-a-division-up tries, when i was learning. like, all of them? maybe not all but close? but was it worth it? you betcha! look on my SIUE team... potential national champion... both ATCHLEY and THE BUGE were taken off d1 schools. one human, one sim. usually i only battle d1 sims, the advantage of humans is too great. but d2/d3, i battle humans like its my job. in my last 10 seasons at d3 i probably battled 8 d2 schools. really, if you aren't david battling goliath, is it fun to win? yes, yes it is. but not as fun :)

And that, Virginia, is the story of the last time anyone ever battled gillispie for a recruit. Ever.

I wish I'd thought of it...
