Need Experience Advice Topic

Hey guys, I am hoping some experienced players can help me out with my problem. I have Florida Tech over in Phelan, I just came off a really tough year (just could never figure out how to get it going), and wanted to move up to a low D-I team. Turns out, I can't do that and while my agent keeps telling me I shouldn't lateral but instead should move up--given that WIS says I am unqualified I am stuck.

So here is my question, is it better to stay put at Florida Tech where I might be facing another tough year--esepcially given how brutal the conference has become (thus draining everyone's WIS)? I also didn't schedule much in non-con because I was told by CS that three years of winning records would be enough to move up to D-I.

Second part, if I do stay, what would you do with the players I have coming back? I am not really sure how to maximize what I have coming back and my last recruiting class had two stud players that were inelgible (?) and that ended up going to a JUCO instead of coming to my school. I am not sure how common that is, so I am not sure if I should stay all the way away from inelgibles now or what.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

i wouldn't stay away from ineligibles, but i also wouldn't pour much money into them either. having them stay is a gamble, and not a technique.

i say stay. the good news is that you actually seem to be a very good recruiter. korth looks like a beast and should be putting up more shots.

I've gotta respectfully disagree with the ineligible thing.  I think it's alot more than luck when it comes down to whether they show up or not.  Reason I say this is, I'm nine for my last nine in having ineligibles show up.  I used the same recruiting techniques for all nine guys, so I think it HAS to be more than a coincidence that they all chose to enroll.  And then again, I may have just been extremely lucky, that's always a possibility.

Of course, since you don't post what that technique is, this information is unverifiable.  Science requires that all theories be refutable...

I should have said falsifiable.  Close enough.

Let me ask, if you had a recruiting technique that you thought gave you an advantage over other coaches, would you be quick to post it for everyone to see?  Just asking.

Well, it depends on what kind of thing you're talking about, but probably.  Lots of experienced coaches have, for example, shared the relative values they place on each recruiting item.  An accurate number for the relative values of HVs and CVs is incredibly valuable.  I haven't recruited at high levels enough to know for sure, but I'd guess around 2.6...  And all the time coaches tell new guys what they think the most efficient way to pull down a player is.  Above all else, this isn't even something that is specifically helping you compete with other coaches.  It's not like they're all going to know how to steal players away from you if they learn your secret.  They'll just be more likely to have their own ineligibles stick around.  Does that make your team slightly weaker by comparison?  Maybe.  But it's not even direct competition.

Well since you just asked for experienced advice, and not necessarily from a good coach, I'll put my two cents in. I had no idea what i was doing when I first started a year ago and took over a pretty good D3 team with 11 returning players then moved up to a good D2 school and realized I needed to learn how to play, so I joined more worlds and read every bit of information I could from good coaches and did some experimenting myself. Didn't hurt that I joined a D3 conference in Knight full of good coaches who were more than willing to help. I said all that to say this. Don't be afraid to ask people for advice and stay at the D2 school, don't just move around. Stay there as long as you would like, but know low-level D1 (from what I hear) is not much fun and extremely challening to even compete. And if skunk compliments you on recruiting, I'd be pretty happy with that, because he was always telling me how much my recruits sucked. lol

Okay, I guess my next question would be, why would I want to do anything intentionally that would make my team even the least bit weaker?

I do appreciate the advice guys. I decided to stay. That said, can anyone look at that Florida Tech team and help me figure out what their identity should be. I feel like I have 3 strong point guards for a DII team, but I have almost no inside game coming back. Williams can run a bit, but his stamina and foul issues might be a problem, I appreciate the fact that some coaches are very forthcoming and others are not as much, but anything anyone is willing to give away would be really helpful.
