I have a FR that came out of HS with a 2.52 GPA, He is playing an important back-up role at C for me getting about 12 minutes a game, his WE is 73 and he's improved 33 points through 15 games.  I am very happy with his play and progress so far.  Midterms came out and he had a 4.0 GPA, right now I have him at 15 minutes of SH, how many minutes can I drop off of SH and put to other catagories without getting into trouble with his GPA??

I think 0 in sh. Even if he flunks and get a 0 gpa, he is still above the 2.0 avg.

The basic Formula for Study Hall Time is (4.0 - GPA x 10 = Study Hall Minutes)

the basic conservative formula, that is :)

Yea that is the formula that I usually stick to but I've never had a guy get a 4.0 after coming out of HS with a 2.5, don't get me wrong I want the kid to get an education (ok stay eligible...lol) and was wondering because of his high WE will cutting him down to like 10 from 15 will he still come in above the 2.0??  I guess I need some advice from someone who has messed with this before.

Your first midterm should come out around game 7 or 8. If your up to game 15 already, that is the first semester final, which is the point where I make my first correction to my season starting SH minutes number. At that point I still leave my number at 10 minutes minimum. I used to use 8, but I ended up having a guy or 2 drop more than I would have liked and had to put 150% or double the SH minutes in the start of the second semester just to make sure he passed the 2nd semester final and was eligible for the conference tourny and the NT. So go with 10 minimum always.

* Freshman: 4.0 - HS GPA x 10
* Sophomore: 3.6 - GPA x 10
* Junior: 3.2 - GPA x 10
* Senior: 2.8 - GPA x 10

Ethan, that use to be the advanced formula before the last 2 or 3 updates. If you use that now, you'll get burned like I did a few seasons ago. Keep it at 4.0 - GPA x 10 = SH Minutes and make adjustments during the season as the midterms and finals come out.

I've been using it with success (and occasional adjustments) and the only guy I've had ineligible was a 1st semester freshman.  That player is now eligible again.

I have a senior with a 3.3 gpa and I give him 0 SH minutes.  He's graduating with room to spare.

So the formula may not be accurate any more, but I can't believe that senior would need 7 minutes of SH when 0 minutes was ample.

Myself I use the formula 4.0 - GPA (rounded down) x 10 = SH minutes and in your example I would have had it at 4.0 - 3.2 x 10 = 8 minutes and the reason I do it this way is that GPA also affects Player Improvement Ratings if you remember Iguana's Chart. The higher the GPA, the faster the Ratings improve.

  • Iguana1's BBIQ Practice Minute Chart: These are the ranges
    I've found based on the 4 seasons since the iq grading has
    changed.
    The number on the left assumes a "fast" learner.  WE of 80 and
    GPA over 3.2.  The number on the right is for a slower learner.
    WE around 40, GPA under 2.5.
    Of course there are extreme cases on both ends.  I had a player
    with a WE of 11 that took about 20% longer than the second
    number.

      D- > D       50-75
      D   > D+    50-75
      D+ > C-     50-75     total F  > C-    200-300

    • C- > C     100-150

That's what I typically use - maybe give FR 5 min or so if their HS GPA is sleep-thru-class awful.  Never had an ineligible (though some have been close).

i generally have a few ineligibles per season across my 3 teams in tark, but that is 95% a product of forgetting the all important second step - adjust after midterms. when i do remember, there are usually no problems.

Court, I'm about 95% certain that at least at this point GPA has absolutely no impact on ratings improvements.  High school GPA has a minimal impact on IQ improvement rate, but even that is insignificant and, as I said, only applies to HS GPA.  As far as I can tell there is absolutely no advantage to having a GPA above 2.0 if it requires using SH minutes you could be using to improve your ratings.
