It saves a bunch of 10 dollar phone calls
How does it save a bunch of $10 phone calls. All you need is one $10 phone call. If he says:

"I spoke with David Piatt and he told me straight up that we're a backup option if his top schools don't come through. Let's keep him on the 'maybe' list."

Or

"Hey coach, honestly, Transylvania is a fallback option for me at this stage. Just being honest - honestly. Keep in touch. Seriously. Do it..do it."

Or

"I called David Bartlett 10 times, left 4 messages, before he finally called me back. He's pretty sure that he's going to get an offer from a 'big time program' but we are an option for him if that falls through."

This means he can be pulled down.

If he rejects phone call, or says the following or says something like "coach stop calling me, slam!" "if this is anyone other than _____ university, please feel free to leave a message" or if your asst coach tells you  "_____ is more excited about a pair of underwear  than us, I think we should move on" then this player cannot be pulled down.

I don't know why you would keep sending phone calls to the same player. If you have 10 potential pulldown target, are you going to spend $1000 and offer 10 scholarships to see if they can be pulled down? That's a hefty cost.

jbrewman, how do you figure you come out on top saving a bunch of $10 phone calls by using $100 scholarships?  You only need to make 1 phone call to a player to know for sure whether they'll be willing to play for you or not.  You're wasting $90 per recruit to find out the same information.  I usually call 20 guys or so on the first cycle and often some more later to find out if they are options for me.  If I were offering scholarships to all of those guys I'd use up a full scholarship's worth of cash just finding out what guys will talk to me.  You've been shot down repeatedly on this because you're just straight up wasting money.  One phone call tells you all you need to know.  If they don't want to play for you, they'll say no or, more often, simply reject the phone call.  When that happens you don't even spend the $10, it's just free information.  If they will play for you they typically give you the backup message.  You don't need to send them another 9+ phone calls... they've already told you the answer.  So I don't see how you think you save money offering the scholarship.

You must have a very special team then.
No. If you don't put in any effort into a recruit, he can reject your scholarship offer outright but still be open to you putting in real effort (HV/CV, scouting trip) and end up signing with you.

As many others have been saying, ONE phone call is all it takes to find out if someone can be pulled down.

Like I said before I've been met with much resistance... Play it how you will by all means... I don't ever get that i'm leading at D3 with one phone call.. Thats all i'm sayin... If you offer, instead of making 3 recruiting trips, you will know for sure... at that point.

what do you mean you are never leading with one phone call. The phone call is to see if the player can be pulled down. The scout trip is to pull the player down bc he will reject your other efforts (CV/HV).

You just made my point.. No other effort is needed if they reject your offer... No more Phone Calls no other effort.

Ok whats cheaper? A $100 scholarship or a $10 phone call. They achieve the same purpose. If the recruit rejects your phone call or tells you one of the msg I posted above, you can't recruit him. No need for further phone calls or other efforts either.

But if they reject your phone call no other effort is needed...  And you spent either $0 or $10 to learn that no further effort is needed...  Instead of $100.  You can be stubborn on this if you want, but please stop telling new coaches to waste their money.  It's hard enough learning to recruit without having a coach with 50+ seasons of experience giving you terrible information in the forums...

haha... that is exactly what i'm telling new coaches.. I wish I would have had that as a new coach... You tell them to call, call, call. That is productive???? 10 dollar 10 dollar, eventually they end up spending much more...

Ok, please tell me how you spend more with a $10 phone call on 1 recruit than spending $100 on one recruit?

FWIW:  The 10 scouting trips is a good rule of thumb to pull down a player, but if you want to take it slow, some players can be pulled down for less scouting trips.  You can try putting in 2 trips at a time until he pulls down and maybe save some money.  The problem is, it takes longer to get your name on the player and thus you might wait yourself into a battle.
