I offer the schollie and make the 10 dollar phone call at the same time. If the schollie is rejected I don't have to worry about the backup option or the left 4 messages and got a call back. Then I can either move on or keep on being a backup option. What is so hard to understand about that??? If he keeps the schollie open then I know for sure he will be mine. If I want. I won't spend thousands to chase something I won't get if the phone call says i'm a backup option if my big schools don't pan out.
This actually makes the most sense of anything he's said in the thread. There probably is something to the idea that if they keep the scholarship offer open they can be pulled down for 5-10 scouting trips and if they reject it initially but give you a backup message they could take significantly more. I've definitely used over 20 before. So I guess in that sense you can figure out how expensive a pulldown will be with the scholarship. On the other hand, that guy that cost me 20+ is now scoring over 20 PPG with over 8 RPG for me and is by far the most dominant post defender I've ever coached, including guys on my D2 team.
