O.T. There is no school that loses like Pitt Topic

Seriously, let's forget the last 20 years, even the last 10 years and just look at the last 3 years of Pitt major sports programs.

Scottie Reynolds layup in the elite 8 becomes an all time classic March Madness moment knocking 1 seed pitt out in a super hearbreaking, but not really choking way.

In December of the same year in a home football game with the Big East title on the line Pitt blows a 20+ point lead.

The following March as a 3 seed Pitt loses in round 2 to Xavier, but it is sold to fans as a team bringing 11 players back that will be great a year later.

That fall Pit comes into the season a top 15 preseason football team, despite an awful season they manage to have a 2 game lead in the awful Big East with 3 games to play. Before hitting the 3rd game they had already lost this lead. In response to winding up in the BBVA Compass bowl in a season where national title talk was somehow existent, Pitt fires their coach. They then hire the first guy to walk through the door for an interview, only to fire him 2 weeks later for abusing his baby mama. This then leads to us asking our old coach to coach our bowl game who of course refuses.

A few months later Pitt is named the team with the most criminals of the top 25 preseason football teams.

Fast forward to tonight in an ending that is unfathomable. I mean...theres no words or excuses it was just an amazing new way to lose.

Over the past decade Pitt has lost in the NCAA tournament to teams such as Kent State, Pacific, Bradley, a mid major at the time Marquette and now Butler.

How is it possible for 1 school to be this incompetent in both football and basketball at the same time. Is there even a school that compares to this?

I just had to rant

you just made a villanova fan feel a lot better ;-)

This loss is not as heartbreaking as the Scottie Reynolds play clearly, but is on a whole new level of unfathomable

Just a standard That's just Pitt moment

That's the stupidest argument I ever heard.  Honestly.  If you came to a different conclusion, maybe.  But "How is it possible for 1 school to be this incompetent in both football and basketball at the same time" is just ridiculous.  Your entire discussion centers around rankings, bowl games, and tournament games.  You know what percentage of D1 basketball teams have been in the tournament enough times in the past 10 years to lose to the 5 teams you mentioned?  Plus the other appearances Pitt has made...  You don't get 1 and 3 seeds and pre-season rankings by being "incompetent."  Sorry.

I have a hard time believing you don't get the point he is making dahsdebater. Clearly, when one is expected to win, and you find new and ridiculous ways to do it, then clearly the team may be incompetent. If you expected him to come out and qualify his statement from every possible angle on a web forum, then I believe that expectation was the stupidest argument I've ever heard. Honestly.

Everyone here knew what he was getting at.

And to stay on topic, that game tonight was unbelievable. Sadly, my wife, who doesn't watch a lot of basketball called it when she filled out her bracket. She said "I'm not picking Pitt because I don't trust those football schools to win basketball games". Flawed as the logic may be, she did pick this upset game in her bracket!

I would blame it on the A.D. Steve Pederson. Has to be the biggest blundering idiot in the A.D. world.

sublightd, if you hadn't said "the team may be incompetent" then what you were saying would have made sense and not been totally contradictory.  But whatever.

I'm an alumnus of James Madison and currently a student at Cal.  To hear somebody say that Pitt is incompetent just sounds utterly ridiculous to me.  Sorry.

Ok let me restate for the literal police

Pitt is the most incompetent of the so called Power schools, being a school that spends lots of money in a D1 athletic programs and is expected to be a championship contender.

That being said, the only thing that is really Pederson's fault is the whole Mike Haywood disaster. Pederson is responsible for dedicating money into the Bball program to make them a contender this last decade.

Honestly though in both of these major sports there is not one competitive major D1 program who can touch the way Pitt manages to screw up in a historic way every single year.

Also just because you were being a difficult a hole...as for those "other tournament aperances" Pitt has made that I didn't mention. Those didn't go well either I just didn't list them. Those ended with losses to Oklahoma State, UCLA, Michigan State, and Xavier. 3 of them still had worse seeds however so if you wanted to call them upsets you still could. Now go  make sure no hyperbole is being used in any other post

It seems like Ohio State gives them a run for their money, though.

I felt for Pitt yesterday, but welcome to Kansas' world.  We haven't been competitive in football in 40 years, and even though we won it all in hoops in 2008, the only thing the sportscasters and opposing fans seem to want to talk about are Bucknell, Bradley and Northern Iowa.

Sure, we're a #1 seed this year but most of us Jayhawks have had our tailfeathers singed enough that we'll need some Prozac before today's game is over.  If we win, the next round is liable to be even worse.

The bigger you are, the more it hurts when you fall.  And everybody falls some time.  Sticking it out in the hard times will usually pay off down the road.

I can't feel for Kansas because as an Illini alumn I must hate on Self for leaving.

We'll settle this in about 90 minutes :)

If your plea for compassion involves a national title 3  years ago then you can't begin to touch the Pitt level.

I also think it says a lot to be a program who is supposed to compete in both sports and finds new ways to lose. Kansas football had a good year or two, but in reality is not a football school.

Pitt is both a football and basketball school, they sink a ton of money into the programs, and for 2 decades have not just lost, but embarassed themselves.

People trying to compare themselves are not stopping to actually read that short list of things, any 2 of those things happening to a team in a decade would be a shame. Those things all happened in 3 years. The last 20 years are full of those stories.  For example there are 2 players in history to successfully leave after 2 years and get drafted in the NFL, both from Pitt, Dion Lewis will be the 3rd this year. For some this may be a good thing, but it's just one of those classic reasons Pitt will never win, when we do have a superstar somehow they are the only people in history eligible to go pro in 2 years.

You have a right to feel sorry for yourself.  Nobody's trying to take that away from you.

But stop and think for a minute:  You have the Steelers.  We have the Chiefs.
