Countering double teams Topic

What are the draw backs to doubleteaming my opponent's leading scorer?  If he expects that I will double team his scorer and he counters by reducing that player's distribution, does that hurt me at all?  I assume that the player only gets doubleteamed when he has the ball, and not all the time?  So if he reduces the distribution to his star player, that actually helps me because his star player won't shoot much, and I won't get burned if his player his fast/good enough to get out of the double team?  Is that all correct? Lastly, is there any way for a team to counter a double team besides reducing distribution?

Someone will be wide *** open, that's the drawback of the doubleteam. If he counters by reducing his distro, then the player will barely touch the ball as the doubleteam definitely limits the players touches already in my opinion. I like the doubleteam a lot, particularly against one dominant scorer or a guy who shoots almost all of a team's 3's. It has its disadvantages and they can be lethal against your team if it fails, though. I would use it sparingly if possible. Especially if I didn't have a good team.

So there's really no strategy to counter it then?  Is the decision basically, is the offensive player better or worse than the defenders? If the offensive player is really good he'll get around it or pass to the open man, or if he's worse than the defenders the double team will overwhelm him?

Much of it depends on the offensive players ATH/BH/PAS/IQ/FT...the higher those are, the better they will fare against the doubleteam. It also depends greatly on your players ATH/SPD/DEF/IQ. It's a very effective strategy when a team has one or even 2 guns. It's a big gamble though. If you have a player that has good ATH/PAS/BH/IQ numbers, he'll effectively break the doubleteam more often than not.

As far as the counter, I wouldn't necessarily reduce the distro of the player if he had good cores to counter it. Distro only means that a play is run for the player. Not necessarily to score, but to have a play run. He may pass out of the play. The doubleteam only occurs when he has the ball. The doubleteam will still be somewhat effective, but you will probably see an increase in the fouls. I would however, increase the distro of your next best offensive weapon to help counter it.

I'd say that just the danger of relying too much on one scorer.  Good reason to distribute the scoring.
