Recruits in Each State Topic

Let's say if I get a team in California, where it says there 222 recruits, how many recruits will be available to a D3 school. Also, what determines the amount of recruits in a state?

Would I be better getting a team in a less populated state so FSS costs would be less, but I would have more states to work with?

To get a good estimate of how many of a state's players will be available to a DIII team (though the number changes with prestige),  just go to the recruiting page of one of your current teams and perfom a search by selecting "any" position, choose a state, and "DIII" for projected level. Directly above the beginning of the player list there should be the total number of available players. I don't think there is any specific percentage that always goes towards each division, so this should give you a rough estimate for different populations.

As a general rule, the more D3 schools in  a state, the more D3 prospects you will see.  Pennsylvania and New York  have 100   D3 schools between them so the majority of their recruits are likely to be D3.  California has twelve D3 schools so you're more likely to find D2 and DI prospects there.

In my Naismith search, for Pennsylvania, there are 62 DI recruits, 49 for D2, and 139 for D3
For California, there are 127 in DI, 52 in D2, and 62 in D3

There may be other aspects to the distribution but the number of schools is the primary factor

Is this actually true? States like HI and AK have 0 D3 schools and a decent % of their recruits are D3. And if it is true, then I think it's actually better to be in CA for a D3 school. Fewer D3 schools to compete with and more D2 dropdowns, that's a win win.

tianyi, I don't remember ever looking at D3 Alaskan players, but I definitely know that when I had my D2 school in Hawaii there were 0 D3 prospects in Hawaii.  Ever.  (in 4 recruiting season).

It would be easier to pulldown as well. If I did go to a CA school, should I only scout that state because it costs a lot.

In Naismith, there are 10 DIII recruits in Alaska and 9 in Hawaii.   I have an A+ prestige so it's possible some of them would be DII at other schools.

I'm surprised by that dahs. Maybe it's because you are looking for D3 with a D2 team in HI, and all of the D3 players are shown in your D2 search. I have scouted HI/AK with a C- prestige team and I see D3 players.

This is pretty much true.

If you search from a D1 school you'll almost never see a D3 recruit in Hawaii or Alaska but maybe a combined 30-40 on the D2 search..

I think it's more likely that you are seeing D2 guys because of your prestige.

With my woeful C- prestige D3 school in Tark, I'm seeing 5 D3 recruits in AK (1 is a transfer) and 2 in Hawaii (one of which is a JUCO).

My first team was Williams in Tark, which was at C- when i took them over. There were D3 players in my AK and HI search on the first day of recruiting. And as rednu posted, he's seeing D3 players with C- prestige as well in these states.

Huh, well nevermind then!

The ideal situation, in my opinion is to be like the only D3 school in a state where there are a lot of D2 schools, if you are focused on pulldowns. I have done really well with Palm Beach Atlantic. It is the only D3 school in Florida, but there are lots of D2 schools, and hence, lots of D2 recruits to pull down. My entire team consists of players from Florida. Also, the closest D3 school is like 400 miles away, so there is less competition - I don't have to worry about other D3 schools swooping in and taking players I am trying to pull down. This is especially true now that we have an A+ prestige. I believe that Colorado is another example of a school like this. I also have NW Nazarene in D2. It is the only D2 school in Idaho, and I managed to have a very good first year of recruiting there, especially among players who want to stay local. With a D+ prestige, I was able to land the #92 ranked Center.

Palm Beach Atlantic is filled by coaches in both of the worlds I am in. It's cool, because the actual campus is only a couple of miles away from where I live.
