Similar player. He was 90+ath, 40ish spd, 85 def for the first 2 yrs he saw the court. Look at the stl/gm in so few minutes.

Yeah.  The team I am taking over had simply HORRID press d last year, trying to beef that up enough to makle it not so horrendous this year and start clawing Keene back to respectability.

You don't need that great of defenders to make the press work. If you cause enough turnovers it does what its suppose to.

I have run the Press for 27 seasons between my two teams. I have been to the title game 7 times with 3 titles.  In the old engine it was all about IQ and SDP, with decent ATH.  Nothing else really mattered.  At one point I had 5 championship games and 3 titles in 10 seasons.  I had it figured out.  After they changed the engine my old formula no longer worked.  ATH and ST became more important and I thought DEF had also.  I over reacted.  I think I have things figured out again.  I have been to 2 title games with my new formula in the last few seasons.  If I'm not there I think I'm close.

In my opinion IQ is most important.  No defense takes a higher IQ than the press.  You need all your starters and top bench players in the A range.  ST becomes important if you do not have backups with high IQs.  The second most important is SPD.  You can't get enough.  ATH is important but I made the mistake of thinking it was as, if not more important than SPD.  I no longer feel that way.  I also thought when they changed the engine that DEF had become a lot more important.  In the old engine 20 was fine.  In the new engine 30-40 is fine.

I'm still playing with the exact formula but I think I am getting close.  We'll see in the next few seasons.  Also, I started a thread here about which offense worked best with each defense.  I shared my ideas and only one other coach shared his thoughts.  I still firmly believe that matching the offense to the defense is critical in this game.  Why have different skills needed for an offense and defense? A complimentary combination allows for efficient recruiting and practice minutes getting the most out of both.

I have heard alot of ppl say spd > ath in the press, and it makes intuitive sense, but my press team is weighed much more heavily towards ath/def and have done pretty well.

As for offense, does anyone see any diff between flex/triangle/motion? I have never ran flex so I can't be sure, but triangle motion, I don't see much of a difference.

Ok, another question, since I am curious regarding people's opinions. . .

How much 'ratings' is one grade level of IQ worth?  Would you start a 450 with an a+ IQ over a 500 with a c?(Yes, I realize that overall ratings are not a valid way to measure two recruits;  but I'm just using it as a proxy here)

(To express it in relative terms, I coudl say "A player who is ten percent less in all relevant ratings but has A+ for IQs vs one who is ten percent more in all relevant ratings but has C's for IQ.)

absolutely I would. A+ vs. C is a huge difference, and more so for the press. C IQ for press means 5 quick fouls in 15 minutes. C IQ on offense, if the player has high distro, also means 4 t/o per game, easily, and fg% in the low 400s, maybe 300s.

THen how about b vs C?  At what point do ratings overcome IQ?

Just trying to see how much people weigh them.

I wouldn't give significant minutes to anyone with less than B- IQ, assuming the player in question isn't a division higher in talent (if the player has D2 level skills and he's on my D3 team, I probably will play him).

That's exactly why I run the FB with the press.

I also think Flex works well with it.

Is it my imagination, or do fouls with the press seem to be up?  Or have pressing teams always been fouling at this rate?  I'm talking D3.

That was one of the changes they made with the new engine, fouls really went up.  They actually adjusted it down after a season or so because they were so high.

Tianyi7886, you have have done very well with your formula.  But you are much higher in SPD with your guards, which is where it is really critical.  I think with the new engine there are several approaches that can work.

I love the Flex with the Press, but the FB is also well suited.  I like Flex because Flex does not require much LP, and needs a lot of SPD.  I seldom have a C on my team and at times will play a SF at C.  It allows for more SPD with the Press too.  You give up REB, but you should make up for it in Steals, more TOs created, and 3 point percentage.  If we don't create 20 TOs per game I'm not happy. Plus, when you have a player with PER and LP playing C, it requires a big guy to come out and cover him to prevent the 3 and allows for drives to the basket and more trips to the FT line.  The other reason I like the Flex is that it does not require much of an IQ.  It is probably the lowest IQ of any offense.  So you can put more minutes into the Press and fewer into the Flex.

I tend to view turnovers in a "Percent of other teams posessions" manner.  Like my last exhibition game, the opponent had 29.3% turnovers.

2bounce, I looked at your games this season and it doesn't seem like you've been hit too bad. But I was looking at the box scores for Chapman and York and it looks like fouls have been killing them. I know that they made fouls go up with the new engine and then adjusted it downwards a bit. But I was wondering if they adjusted it back up again? But I guess they would have made an announcement if they did that. Admittedly this is a tiny sample size in Naismith for the underway season.

And just curious 2bounce, how many minutes do you spend practicing offense and defense?
