avg ratings for each level Topic

Has anyone done research, spreadsheet or posted in the forums....the typical averages for ratings in d3,2,1. I realize it is dynamic and each season changes. For ex. For a point guard, would 50 spd be typical, 60 in d2,etc. I ask because hardball dynasty has a league avg formula. I would like to see one here to examine and attempt to recruit over these avgs.

I'm not sure what "average" will tell you because the average ratings for players in A prestige teams is usually going to be higher than those in C prestige.  An average rating would only tell you what a mediocre team might have on its roster.

Well, for starters someone knowing what a mediocre team might have on his roster would tell him what numbers to shoot for higher than if he wanted to be better than mediocre, right?

My Princeton team is pretty close to being mediocre.

or you can go look at the rosters for a couple of mediocre teams and see what you need to be mediocre, or better than mediocre.

i hate this kind of stuff...at some point people should have to do SOME kind of work to have success instead of being spoon fed chart after chart

It's not that I necessarily hate threads like these, but I understand the frustration of constant threads like these. There are already several other threads, if you search for them, that have the "average" ratings of players at different positions at each level.  You might not find it all in one thread, but if you look you'll likely find all the information you're seeking across two or three threads that have already been made awhile back.

That and the biggest issue with this is the dynamic nature of this game.  With the most recent engine change it's tough to say what average is now.  You've played for 50+ seasons, and thus you should have a decent idea of what talent is at the levels you've participated in.

The recent changes have moved the averages some too.

You guys dislike repeat threads, I dislike self righteous forum monitors. To each his own. I was interested in the topic so stick it where the sun don't shine if you feel it is an unecessary topic.

more like a cave is what he's thinking I bet...

I didn't intend for my comment to be a putdown. Sorry.  I'm a stats geek myself, and probably have made more spreadsheets and analyses of my teams than is healthy.

My question was an honest one, though - other than having a number to look at I wasn't sure what knowing the average rating would do for anyone.   When I look at upcoming opponents, I don't look at ratings.  I look at their top 6 or 8 players and their cores depending on position.  It gives me a more useful set of numbers than ratings.

I actually quite enjoy threads like this. Especially when the information requested gets attached by someone. I think a lot of people who play this game not only love basketball, they love the stats the games generate and also the ratings that generate the games. The numbers can be very insightful and helpful or they can be simply interesting.

The fact that topics get revisited on the forums is also great. The game is ever changing. I’m sure someone wrote a thread on practice plans 2 years ago, but I’m also pretty sure that aspect of the game has changed since then. I’d rather hear people’s thoughts on that as it relates to current game play. Plus, someone else might have a new opinion on something today and may not have commented on a thread in the past, or may be new to the game. So, if you have a question, bring it up. If you have an answer or opinion, state it. If you don’t care for the thread, make a snarky comment and move on the next one.

All that said, I did some quick research on the topic at hand. This is not a total average of every team in Allen world, just the best, worst and middle-est in each division. This was taken by finding the conference with the highest RPI, the lowest RPI and the conference with the average of the two. Then, the ratings for those 36 teams were totaled and averaged, giving us the following results (I don’t know how to format things on the forums very well so its not in chart form, sorry).

DI Allen Team Averages (ACC, A10, Colonial):

ATH – 63.9

SPD – 51.9

REB – 48.7

DEF – 65.3

BLK – 40.4

LP – 50.2

PER – 47.1

BH – 50.9

PAS – 52.8

WE – 62.9

STA – 76.0

DUR – 62.2

TOT – 671.9

DII Allen Team Averages (Gulf South, Penn State Ath Conf, Northern Sun):

ATH – 46.7

SPD – 46.5

REB – 38.8

BLK – 31.2

LP – 39.2

PER – 39.8

BH – 43.1

PAS – 42.2

WE – 62.2

STA – 76.6

DUR – 59.5

TOT – 574.3

DIII Allen World Averages (North Atlantic, Commonwealth, Heartland):

ATH – 32.7

SPD – 38.9

REB – 30.9

DEF – 32.5

BLK – 24.6

LP – 29.6

PER – 29.3

BH – 34.4

PAS – 32.1

WE – 59.0

STA – 74.6

DUR – 59.6

TOT – 478.1

Perhaps that’s helpful. It can give you a clue as to how your team stacks up against the division average. I think it’d be a lot more helpful if it could be broken down into PGs, SGs, SFs, PFs and Cs (per the original poster's request). Also a lot more work. Here’s the part that I find very interesting:

DI Allen World, ACC Conference only averages (our resident super-conference):

ATH – 83.4

SPD – 60.8

REB – 59.0

DEF – 83.5

BLK – 50.8

LP – 62.1

PER – 58.6

BH – 60.4

PAS – 63.6

WE – 60.7

STA – 75.4

DUR – 63.3

TOT – 781.5

Pretty much 10 to 12 points higher than average in each ratings category. But, if you happen to be playing one of the 45 ACC teams in this season’s Allen World NT starting tonight, take note…as a rule, they are lazy as sloths. Their WE’s are well below the DI national average, the DII national average and are approaching the depths of DIII average work ethic. (Suckers).

I don't think overall team averages will tell you much at all.  You have to look at each position individually.  And then you really need to look at where the player is playing and not just where they are listed.

I see that you play in Crum.  Take a look at a few teams at each level, but don't use the record as an end-all-be-all.
I have a team in DII Heartland Conference.  We've been at the top in Conf RPI  (2nd place once, an 1st every other time) for the past 6 or 7 seasons.
If you look at the top teams, you'll see what you should shoot for at that level.  But take a look at Montevallo too.  They are 0-the season in conference play, but posted a respectable 8-2 record in non-conference.  In that conference, they are still well below the curve, but improving.  Throw that team in the Peachbelt Conf and they are probably 6-5 right now (14-7 overall) and have a shot at the PIT this year.
My W. Alabama team knocked off #1 Lincoln, but we dropped 4 other conference games, 3 to unranked teams.

Even with a ton of research, the numbers are all relative.  The better the conference, the better you'll need those numbers to be to remain competitive.  Especially in DI, where you can dominate a lower tier conference but get killed in non-conference and the post-season.

Its fairly easy to check your conference and see what you need to do, especially if you have excel.  Once you have something started, you can just add each year's freshmen to keep up to date and create a larger sample-size.

Hope that helped.

went through 2 worlds. limited info to top 25 teams in DIII seniors. need to learn spreadsheets in order to look at all levels. worlds are past 11th games so i dont expect a large amount of difference in final numbers.
