What Ratings to Look for in a Fastbreak Offense Topic

I just took over a fastbreak team, and I'm not sure what attributes I should be looking for when recruiting players. Should I be looking more for attributes like ATH, SPD, BH, PASS or attributes like LP, PER, REB, etc. If you could verify by position that would be great!

More emphasis on ATH, SPD & ST, less emphasis on everything else.  You still want good fundamentals, but they become a little less important.  Even more so when you couple it with FCP defense.

Ball handling makes a number four on my list.  Fast break is prone to turnovers, and that can help you limit them.

What about positional attributes. how would you rank them?

From my time at CUrry. . .Rebounding.  Fast break tends to put up allot of shots, and strong rebounding is paramount.  The other ratings tend to depend on what defense you pair with it.

I'm running man to man with my fastbreak at D3

Well, add defense, obviously.  If you have defense, speed, Athleticism, Stamina and BH, with a good rebounder in the post - you should have a pretty good team, all told.  I would put those ahead of Pass/LP/PER/BLK, while obviously not ignoring them)

For Bigs I value ATH above everything and the next important attributes in no particular order are SPD, REB, DE, BLK, and LP.
For Guards I value SPD the most and next important in no particular order are ATH, DE, PER, BH, and Pass.
SF's can be pretty much whatever you want, but i'd want a player that will end up at least 45 SPD.
Similar to other offenses, but more emphasis on speed at all positions. You can get away with one or two slower players, but most guards that will end up below 70 SPD and bigs that will end up below 25 SPD aren't worth going after. Also if you decide to use the press stamina becomes more important. As it is stamina is more of a luxury. I've always believed that i'd rather have a star play 20mpg than an avg player play 25mpg, but i'm sure some people value stamina more than I do.

I would put BH above the other offensive skills such as PER, LP and Pass in the break.  In the break turnovers are your dire enemy.

How strongly should I be considering BH and PASS for posts

Honestly, I ignore BH an PASS in bigs.   I have guys in the teens and twenties in low DI.

My opinion only:  I look for bigs with decent BH no matter what offense I'm running.  But it still comes into play only after emphasis on SPD, ATH, STAM and  DEF.

High SPD/ATH will lower your team's fouls a bit and let them draw more fouls, where FT will factor in.  And it's surprised me how much STAM is a factor in the FB/FCP scheme - I'd encourage anyone running that setup to also have good bench depth. You will play a lot of people out of necessity.

Yeah, I play all 12 in my uptempo FCP/FB.  In fact all of them average at least 10 minutes a game.

Stamina is manipulatable  though....I have found if your AVERAGE rating is around 83 you'll have no worries.   I'll take a better player with low STA(upper 60's to start)  and wait for him to grow  IF I have a couple 90's guys at his position.

Usually, I try to have 5 guards with a total STA score over 400 (>80/player) and 7 "bigs" with a similar average.

My bigs are  interchangeable. My SF and C's look pretty similar.   My 3rd string C last season is my starting SF this year.    I just play the slowest and worst Pass/BH guys at C and the fastest guys with the highest BH/Pass guys at SF.   My PF slot is filled with the guys in the middle.    I don't look at REB, BLK, LP or  PER at all for the "bigs".  If they have it great, if not I don't care.

I have noticed that FT is pretty important to being a good scorer.  Guys with a high ATH and FT end up putting up points pretty effectively.

thanks for the input everybody, these are some great guidelines.

I don't want to start a new topic, but if a recruits proximity preference is "Far from home" and my school is 320 miles away from him, will I be considered less by him because he wants to be far away?
