The Best DIII Team of All-Time Topic

I don't know girt, for the last year or so the D2 and D3 players were amazing. Eventhough there weren't caps in ath/sp you would never see more than a 5 point improvement in ath/sp in a season and in the majority of cases it was 4 and counting off season improvement you wouldn't get more than 20-25 improvement for a career. Also LP mattering for guards I think turned high LP guards into very efficient scorers. I know on my Whitman teams I had some studs but I'm also sure the 2 best D3 players I ever signed were on my Cal Santa Cruz team.
I did not ever think Buser on my squad would have become a scoring threat (especially compared to his backcourt mate, Dennis), but he's an incredibly efficient scorer and could possibly become the all time scoring leader at the end of this season.  LP is a very nice thing to have in a guard.

I agree with Girt on this. Even though it's been some really good players come along the last year or so when it comes to strength of teams I think it was much stronger 2-3 years ago. Pre-potential you had to recruit players then mold them to the type of player you wanted and some coaches mastered that and made very strong teams with very little weakness. I left  D2 and 3 for a few seasons and I have honestly found it tough to get back to it because the first season I recruited in D2 after returning I honestly thought I had made a mistake and pulled up the list for D3 recruits. Then this past season in Rupp I went back to D3 and it just blew my mind how bad I thought these recruits are! I may be totally wrong about the difference in the recruits, maybe I was just in D1 to long and it made me think they are worse but to me they sure look bad!

Forgot about this thread/John Dennis debate. Largely, people don't understand how important a player's role is on a team and underrate athleticism and defense. I've won a few titles on that very theory.

I will have another team/player to throw into this debate in a few weeks as the Phelan season gets going.

If that team was the best ever (don't care to look at it, I know its not.) then you wouldn't have to be patting yourself on the back. Just some food for thought.

No doubt that team is very athletic, but best team ever?  Seriously?  You only have 8 returning players and only 5 upperclassmen.  You don't even have a player that can play in the post and score consistently down there.  I know we get excited about our teams, but that might be a little too excited jones.

For what reason do I need a post option?

I am bringing in 3 jucos.

How about no real three-point threat and no post option?

I'm sure you'll get to the line plenty, but not 50 times per game.

In general, it's just better to shoot 3s. It would be much more detrimental to not have a 3-threat than not have a post threat.

I rarely shoot 3's. Some seasons I have everyone at -2 and shoot less then 50 3s on the season. We generally lead the nation in FT shooting/attempts and FG % though.

Oh wait, you're saying I don't have either. I think Clymer and Eppinger will be able to score plenty, especially since they both have improving to do.

Additionally, I've included a link to the jucos I'm bringing in: they all know either my O or my D or both. The top 3 are jucos, the bottom one is a 4 year player.

It's obviously based on team build/player type and I haven't done the research to figure out the implications of FTA/possesion + TO/possession when guys are set to -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, but it's better to shoot 3s than midrange jumpers, obviously, that is the point I was trying to make.

Either way, I will have plenty of offense even if Clymer has to average 20-something!

Bottomline, since I'm talking to myself, is that we'll see at the end of the season, but I'll be very, very good.

Bump.

I did end up winning the title with this team. I do not have elite bigs, but they can all defend and rebound. I think Clymer/Eppinger is one of the best wing tandems of all time. Despite losing them, I will be the best team again next year, we'll see if variance allows me to go back to back.

My closest game during the Tournament was an 8 point game against a team that I lost to in the nonconference portion of my schedule.

Don't you always have the best team, regardless of anything else?   ;)
