Have you seen the Horizon lately? Snow White and the seven dwarfs. NKy has a championship pedigree and seems to be set for bigger things. they would up the competition level straight away.
Northern Kentucky wouldnt' have much of an impact initially. The NCAA requires you to wait 5 years before being eligible for the NCAA tournament, although you can compete in your conference.

When North Dakota St. joined the Summit League, they asked their 5 freshmen to redshirt. In doing so, they were eligible to play in that 5th season.  No. Dakota St. won the Summit Conference and advanced to the NT, where they lost to Kansas 84-74.
Yes, but the Summit is not nearly as good as the Horizon. Northern Kentucky would have a better chance to compete sooner if it joined the Summit than if it joined the Horizon.  I would veture that if you took any of the top 4 teams in the Horizon other than Butler, in any given year, that team would win the Summit. The talent difference is appreciable.  North Dakota State, as good as they were that one season, did not have the talent to win the Horizon or even finish in the top 3.  The Horizon and the MVC are like the feeder conferences for the Big 10 and Big 12. Players who are not quite talented enough (and a few that are) for the Big 10 and Big 12 end up in the Horizon and the MVC. The Summit gets what is left over after that, more or less.

To draw another parallel, UC Davis has a very good overall athletics program.  They joined the Big West, which is comparable to the Summit, having better facilities and a bigger budget than most of the Big West schools.  UC Davis has done reasonably well, but hasn't rocked the world of the Big West.  Given time, they could rise to the top, but it's been almost 10 years and it hasn't happened yet.  So, it would be silly to think that UC Davis could have gone into the WCC and somehow improved that situation.   The Horizon is to the Summit as the WCC is to the Big West.

NDSU could easily have finished in the top three in the Horizon in 2009.  And yes, I'm extremely familiar with both NDSU and the Horizon.  Butler was the talented but young.  UWGB was solid but not as good as NDSU.  Cleveland State had some high-end talent, but weren't as deep as NDSU.  I actually think they beat UWM in bracketbusters that year.

Although I agree that the Horizon is significantly better in any given year.

You may have a point, although Milwaukee was 5th that year, so beating them doesn't prove much if the argument is that they would have finished top 3. NDSU probably would have finished upper half that year.  I would give them that, at least.  I have a hard time believing they would rise near the very top without, what seems to me, enough size and athleticism to match up night after night. . . hey, how did this turn into a debate about 2009 North Dakota State?   It must be my fault.

I blame alblack.

Sorry, you're right, it's Milwaukee, not UWM.  Silly Panthers.  No one else in the world calls it "Milwaukee," just the basketball team.

Anyway, I would typically agree about size and athleticism, but that NDSU team played together for so long that I think they could overcome that in a mid-tier conference like the Horizon.  You could be right, no way to know!

Murray State doesn't expect to name a coach before Monday. Several former players have endorsed Steve Prohm, their current assistant.  They've also spoken to Winston Bennett, who finished 11-20 in his 5th year at NAIA Mid-Continent Univ.  Bennett played at UK and was an assistant to Pitino at both UK and Boston Celtics. He also coached at Kentucky St from 2001-03 but got in trouble for hitting a player during practice.

Explain this one.   Ed DeChellis leaving his alma mater Penn State for Navy?

Murray State promoted assistant Steve Prohm, who'd been Billy Kennedy's assistant for 12 years, at 3 different schools.
******

Vermont promoted assistant John Becker.  Prior to coming to Vermont, he was the head coach at Gallaudet and Catholic

Dana O'Neill of ESPN wrote:

Bizarre, confusing, stunning. Those were just some of the words on the Twitter universe after news broke that Penn State’s Ed DeChellis was leaving a Big Ten job for a middle-of-the-pack Patriot League job at a service academy.

Here’s another good adjective to add to the mix: indicting.

…… Penn State just made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years. This should be a time to capitalize and build. Instead the coach is leaving town.

Reportedly unable to get the assurances from the university administration that he was hoping for this season, DeChellis bolted. Bolted for a job that will result in a pay cut.

If there is an equivalent spin on the coaching carousel, I haven’t thought of it. Why? Because it doesn’t happen. Coaches don’t voluntarily leave major-conference jobs for low-major spots.

That DeChellis, a Penn State graduate, defied convention screams loud and clear as to just how bad things are at Penn State.

For years the basketball team has been a little sisters of the poor stepchild to football. The dirty little truth is, whether the team is good or bad, the university profits thanks to the hefty paycheck doled out by the Big Ten Network. And so the university pays little and cares less about the program.

Until DeChellis was hired, the Bryce Jordan Center sported little in the way of artwork or signage to signal it was the home of Penn State basketball, and only last season were the basketball staffs given significant office space.

Worse, this season the team was forced to move out of the Bryce Jordan Center and
practice in the nearby intramural building, in a gym outfitted for volleyball and only retrofitted for basketball. This as the Nittany Lions were jockeying for position for an at-large bid. The reason? Bon Jovi needed the space for rehearsal and the university was hosting a career fair.

When DeChellis tendered his resignation, he also handed down an indictment on his alma mater.

Radford coach Brad Greenberg resigned after admitting to providing improper benefits to an ineligible player.  Greenberg is the brother of Virginia Tech coach Seth "Why do we always get the NIT?" Greenberg

There are now three D1 coaching vacancies...Radford, Penn State, and Alabama A&M.    The latter is in no hurry. They lost their coach on March 19 but didn't start telephone interviews until May 11.

More on Radford's Brad Greenberg.   He worked in basketball his entire life but didn't get his 1st head coaching job until age 53.  He's most well-known during his one season as G.M. of the 76ers, when he drafted Allen Iverson over Kobe Bryant. He was fired after that season.

Drafting a future hall of famer over another future hall of famer who happened to be coming out of high school is not a bad choice.

He went with the safer of the 2.  People in Philly would've gone crazy if he chose a high schooler with the college star Iverson available.

He wasn't fired because of his draft choice.  In his one season as G.M., the 76ers finished 22-60. Both Greenberg and the coach were fired afterwards.  Seth Greenberg is resentful of his brother's firing since he only had the one season

Penn State is getting advice from former Vanderbilt and South Carolina coach Eddie Fogler on the search for Ed DeChellis' replacement.

Fogler was hired to assist athletic director Tim Curley. According to multiple sources, Penn State will consider East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo, who is from Carlisle, Pa. Lebo was also recruited to play at North Carolina by Fogler when he was an assistant to then coach Dean Smith. Lebo's father, Dave, was a longtime coach at Carlisle High.

Lebo was fired at Auburn but hired at East Carolina last year and led the Pirates to an 8-8 record in Conference USA and an 18-16 record overall, losing to Jacksonville in overtime in the CIT tournament.

Duquesne coach Ron Everhart would also listen seriously to Penn State, according to a source. Everhart has taken over a number of programs, notably Northeastern and Duquesne, and turned them into winners.

Drexel's Bruiser Flint is getting third-party calls but hasn't heard from Penn State officials, according to a source. Wiconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter remains a possibility, as well.

But sources expect Lebo to be atop the list based on his connections to the area, his reputation as above reproach and the ties to Fogler.

Arizona State coach Herb Sendek, who has ties to the area, reiterated Wednesday that he's staying put with the Sun Devils and isn't a candidate.

Alabama A&M on Thursday announced that it had promoted Willie Hayes to head coach.

Hayes, a former starting point guard for the school and a 16-year assistant, will take over for L. Vann Pettaway, who was fired after leading the program for 25 years

Jeff Lebo isn't interested in the Penn State job.  Good for him! It'd be pretty tasteless to be fired from Auburn with 2 seasons remaining on his contract, being basicly unemployable, getting hired at East Carolina, then leaving after one season.

A new name in the mix is former Utah coach Jim Boylen

why would anyone in a decent situation go to Penn State after the way DeChellis left? If an alum goes like that, there are serious underlying issues in support from the athletic department...

Dickie V says Penn State should bring in Bobby Knight.  The only name that could match JoePa.
