Speaking of midterm grades, how's this:

Mid-term grades just came out. I scanned the report in and attached it to this email - I know how lazy you are ;)
As you'll see, we've got some major issues. If we don't get these bozos into Study Hall, we may be playing short, plus you know how Dean Wermer has it in for 'student'-athletes. I highlighted the potential problems:

o Student Name Yr. Mid-Term
GPA
Cumulative
GPA
o
o Robinson, Dave Jr. 2.2 2.2 o
o Bowers, James So. 2.1 2.8 o
o Choquette, Michael So. 3.2 2.6 o
o Grand, Kenneth Fr. 2.2 0.0 o
o Hill, Gary Fr. 2.0 2.5 o
o Raleigh, Bernard Fr. 2.3 0.0 o
o Credle, Nicholas Fr. 2.0 0.0 o
o Cordle, Jeff Jr. 2.3 2.2 o
o Steele, Adam So. 3.8 3.0 o
o Street, William So. 2.8 2.9 o
o Cook, Willie Jr. 3.2 2.6 o
o Schweiner, Robert So. 3.6 2.9 o

Anyone wanna top this? 7 guys are in jeopardy.

You beat my Rhodes Scholar athletes twice last season. I'm not surprised that you recruit stupid players.

i wonder what happens if i fail 8 guys.

Let's just all submit tickets and complain. Because this is bull. We're paying good money for this and they are likely making changes that we are oblivious to. We want to coach basketball, not micro-manage student athletes, especially when it seemingly just comes down to a random draw on the effect of study hall minutes.

Also, if a cumulative GPA is still over 2.0, then is the player still eligible? Let's say my Center gets a 1.9 GPA this semester, but his cumulative GPA is still 2.4. Is he ineligible?

Yes, he is ineligible until the next grading period.  No different than real life.

Looks to me like you have optimized practice minutes for basketball related skills without having anybody fail.  You just need to get Steele's nose out of the books and in the gym.

Steele is a nerd. He just told me he's thinking of going abroad and studying at Oxford for his JR year. What a loser.

I sent in something to CS and they just responded with "no, no changes to grades" and nothing else.

I hadn't sent in a ticket in over a year, but the couple that I have sent in the last few weeks have had the most pathetic responses ever. Have they just given up in that aspect or what?
6/12/2011 10:48 PM
If they haven't actually changed anything, why is that a pathetic response?  I actually haven't noticed anything.

Of course, I'm not trying to defend CS.  That's pretty much the home of sucksville most of the time.

That's pretty laughable ... they're not making changes on the stuff we're clamoring for, seble's apparently spent the last X number of months in a cave somewhere avoiding everyone ... and you think they're behind the scenes furiously making unannounced GPA changes? Let me sum that up for you: No.

tianyi -- are you one of the guys who starts out by giving no SH minutes and then adjusts at midterms?
6/12/2011 11:47 PM
Not exactly. I always give my FR study hall minutes right off the bat based on what their HS GPAs are. The FR you see there, all had between 5-10min of SH already. I give my SO-SR SH based on what their cumulative GPAs are, with guys below 2.5 getting SH right off the bat and then adjusting at midterm if they need more.

I'd be interested in seeing what the HS GPA's were and how many SH mins each started with. (I'm guessing you may not longer have the latter # because you've probably already bumped up their mins ... if you wanted to share your scale I'd be interested in that.)

nothing scientific. I just eyeball the numbers. I know there is a formula out there, but I believe that to be too conservative and gives too much SH minutes.

FR GPA:

Bernard Raleigh
PG | Freshman | 6'0" | 182 lbs. | (2.89 HS gpa)

Kenneth Grand
PG | Freshman | 6'4" | 193 lbs. | (2.68 HS gpa)

Nicholas Credle
SG | Freshman | 6'1" | 195 lbs. | (2.31 HS gpa)

Gary Hill is a RS FR, so no HS GPA. The starting GPA isn't great, but it isn't awful either. Surprised they were all on the bubble with some SH.
