recruiting question, please Topic

Do players "drop down" from D2 to D3 during recruiting? Can they be pulled down? It seems unlikely given cash available. Thanks in advance.

yep, they sure do. A good bet is to go through the DII lists to see guys you like and then call their coach one time during the first recruiting cycle. Any kind of response that indicates that you are a backup means they can be pulled down, and they may very well drop down to you as recruiting progresses. If they tell you that you're chasing something you'll never reach, or he isn't going to be wearing your uniform next season, give it up because they will never be recruitable to you.

Stick within 200 miles. If your a backup, send 10+1 scouting trips to pull down. Don't buy hv,cv till your being considered. If needed offer a start,10 mpg instead of campus. A lot cheaper. Goal is to not over extend in case d2 takes them. Spend just enough so you have enough money for someone else if needed. If 3k per schollie, want enough left to offer a home visit, schollie, minutes for last day and a half of recruiting players already dropped. Emergency money in case the pulldown money did not bear fruit.

The scouting trips because they can not be rejected. Counts as recruiting effort.. Hv,cv will be rejected by pulldowns.

Maybe, no one will get this... but does anyone imagine Mordin from Mass Effect 2 on Carl's last two messages?  I don't know.. might just be me.

To tag onto Carl's points, recruiting is an exercise in calculated risk.  The higher your target is rated, the more risky it is to chase him - to gauge your estimated ratings range, do a search on D3 recruits, set it to "4 years" and look at the highest rated 4-year player in D3 (this will vary depending on your prestige).  That number represents the approximate threshold of risk when you pursue D2 players for pulldowns.

It's not a hard and fast rule, but it's a guideline to go by.  You can certainly recruit players who rate higher than that, but the higher you go, the more risk you're taking and the more expensive they will be to sign.  At D3 budget levels, you probably aren't going to afford the 25-30 SVs it could take for higher rated guys.

That's the exciting part of recruiting.  If you roll the dice and win, it can make your program for the next 4 years.

Waiting for drop downs is always an option, especially if you're simultaneously trying to pull down other recruits.
