This guy's really D2? Topic

So I bounced early from my first-ever NT appearance this season (only took me 6 seasons of false starts and boneheaded screwups) and I've been following the teams who are still in it.  One thing I've been marveling at has been the level of talent some of these teams assembled.  I've still got a LONG way to go.

Then I stumbled on this one.  I would think there are some D1 teams out there that might find some PT for a guy like this, no?

I can't see myself ever recruiting a guy like that.   Freak of nature, lucky grab, or skillful recruiting?

Obviously alot of high-high potentials, but yes, that guy is a D2 monster.  Scary thing is, way back before potential was introduced, Lostmyth used to occasional have guys reach a 900 overall rating in D2.  Of course, Lostmyth is kind of in a league of his own...

I had a guy on Wilmington (D2) in Crum last season (Willie Cottrell) who ended up getting drafted with an overall rating that was close to that, but that guy is still alot better than my guy was.

What's insane is that with stats like that, he's only getting 9.2 points a game as a starter in 26 minutes a game. Over here in Allen, he'd be getting 2 to 3 times that many points and probably 50% of the team distro.

There is definitely some luck involved with getting a player like that.  You know the guy has some high-highs, but obviously a guy in D2 who ends up that good had some high-end high-highs - more than 1, and in some very lucky places.  But good recruiting puts you in the best position to get players like that.

He would start on all three of my D1 teams. One of which is getting ready to make the NT and another finished with an 88 rpi. He wouldn't start on the high end of D1 but would easily start for any mid major - low big 6 school.

So I'm doing some mental math and it seems to me that that player could have started in the mid-500s total rating range which is reasonable for a high-prestige D2.  Given enough high-highs, his WE of 91 and a 3 or 4-year starting job he could have added 300 points to reach his current ratings total.

The best player on my team was ranked in high school (I lucked out and landed him before the 2-3 update) with lots of high-highs.  He's started every season and he's gained about 200 points of ratings by his junior year.  He'll be even better next season but he doesn't have anywhere near Bell's LP.

Since that update, I've seen just about every single ranked player within pulldown range go to a D1 school.  The ones within my D2 reach usually go to sim D1 teams.  I'd love to get another kid like Jones -  or 2, but then I'm greedy.

By the way, that Delta St. team is in the NT championship game (Smith) tonight vs. St. Martin's.  Believe it or not, Delta's a 2 point 'dog.

They are in the ELITE EIGHT tonight.

Considering it's Smith this guy is a hold over from when D2s could still sign really highly ranked players which is why that whole team is full of guys who don't belong in D2.

Or it's just really good recruiting, because those  FR (1 RS) all look to be locks to finish over 700, and possibly hitting 800.

and by the way I know the Delta State coach and when he recruited Bell they didnt have a very good prestige, so I think it was good recruiting job on his part. And I also believe Bell started out below a 500 total rating although I could be wrong about that.

just got confirmation that bell started as a 458 overall (which is why he wouldnt have been recruited by D1) and he was high in every category except passing (average). That along with the high WE and the fact he started each year, plus alot of HIGH HIGHs make for a sick player at DII

original ratings for this beast:

ATH    38
SPD    16
REB    61
DEF    37
SB    48
LP    44
PE    1
BH    15
PASS    36
WE    71
ST     55
DU    36
FT    B-

458? Seriously?  Wow, that puts a whole different spin on potential + WE!  He's a monster!

Brb, going back to revise my scout list now :)

won't see something exactly like him anymore - no highs for stats starting below 10 (the logic for this eludes me...)
