Recruiting players for your scheme Topic

This is my first post and it's from my phone so pardon any typos please. I've just finished my second season of hoops dynasty and although I've learned a lot there are still many questions I have if anyone cares to answer.

First: other than calling a coach and scouting a player to find out what system they play are there any particular skill categories that fit will with certain offenses or defenses? From what I've seen so far IQ has more effect than any other stat (I may be wrong) so if you get the jump on a guy that has a C IQ as a freshman they will be ahead of the game.

Well that's my only question for now but one, it seems I should know what a player's scheme is for free lol, and two I would think there are attributes that work better with certain schemes. Help please!

First of all, don't worry about the freshmen IQ.  They won't play enough to make a difference and they'll catch  up soon enough.  The same goes for their H.S. offense and defense. It really won't make a difference in the long run.

The only exception is transfers. It's helpful if their IQ is in the correct OFF/DEF

If you're rebuilding or just need to promise a start to win an elite recruit they might play a lot as freshmen...

If you're rebuilding it doesn't really matter how good the guy is as a freshman.

If someone recruits a freshman at a D+ or a C- and I recruit an F player wouldn't my recruit be behind in the long run? It just seems that if you get a player in H.S. that runs your schemes and after you do a scouting visit and see they are competent in those schemes they would be better players. I see lots of people who have senior players and their IQ is an A-. I actually had to senior PG's who had either B+ or A- IQ's. I'm not sure if they were JUCO guys or 4 year players but I would hate have a senior with such a terrible IQ. Are some players just stupid? Is the GPA a reflection of how fast or slow a player learns your schemes?

He will mostly catch up. He may be a little behind, but not enough for that to be a large determining factor in who you sign. That should be based on talent/potential.

IQ improvement is determined by HS GPA and work ethic (along with how many mins you put into team practice, of course). You could actually have a high we, high GPA guy who starts with an F iq in your sets end up with higher iq than a guy who knew both sets and started with a C-.

I'd be surprised if you found one top coach who recommended making HS off/def a primary concern in recruiting.

I agree with girt, I just checked, after 7 games, my F IQ player is a C-, so the frosh catches up near immediately with some practice minutes.  If you are talking long term, the single best way to get high IQ's is to devote lots of time to practice, of course, that is at the expense of ratings improvement, as many things in this game, best is finding the right balance between team and ind practice.

I look at knowing my sets in a recruit, much like GPA or even FT%, as a bonus, but I seldom recruit based on any of those factors - best is to recruit for the cores and potential, and again, we can't get everything in a recruit, so the key is to find the right balance - if somehow that player includes some set knowledge and a high GPA, all the better.

transfers and jucos IQ can matter - esp if you are recruiting to fill a particular gap

for others,  I look at high school systems as a tiebreaker if I need to pick one of two guys otherwise similar

Red, the difference between a C- and an F is actually smaller, in terms of practice minutes, than the difference between an A- and a C.  That is, it's not an even scale, it's more along the lines of a bell curve or something like that... so when your C- reaches A, the F kids are going to be low A- or high B+, not all the way down at C+.  It's a smaller difference that it seems, even with GPA, WE, etc. held equal.

I've found that almost every player will raise his Off/Def IQs to at least a B by his junior year.   I've also found that once you've had a few seasons to build, your freshmen probably aren't going to play much anyway.    The only exceptions I've had were redshirt freshmen, which is one great reason to try to redshirt every season - the redshirt is going to have a bigger impact for longer than an equivalent non-redshirt.  (For example, my leading scorer this last season was a sophomore who redshirted as a FR  whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx.  He's going to be a beast as a senior. ).

I've also noticed that WE seems to have an impact on IQs, too.   Low WE is going to likely mean slower learning curve on your schemes.

For attributes, Fastbreak and Press require more ATH, SPD & ST than other offenses and defenses, especially if you play both. 

On the other hand, Triangle and I'm guessing Zone probably emphasize ATH, SPD & ST the least, although you definitely still want them.

DEF is definitely important in Man-to-Man, less so in the other Ds (although it's more important than it used to be for Press, not sure about Zone).

I'm far from an expert on these, especially in the current game, and would love to hear the opinions of some of the better coaches.  Especialy on the nuances of Motion, Flex, and Triangle (if there really are any).

I do see a lot of zone teams with poor defender ratings. 30 to 40 range.

probably not very successful initially but I believe i was looking at younger teams. I know if I ran a zone I would still want great D stats.
