I'm potentially looking to do a D3 to D1 jump, and was wondering which geographic region would it be best to build a bottom tier D1 team? I am qualified for most of the C- openings and a few of the C teams,

come on to the MWC... we're going to need a couple new owners... BYU will be a great opening!

pretty sure I don't qualify for BYU, since I'm going from D3 to D1, not D2. Denver looks promising with me picking up the leftover of Colorado and CO State. Let me weigh this a little bit more and see what else opens up in D2 and D1.

Be ecstatic that youre qualified for C jobs.  I've been at Valpo for 5 seasons...took them from a D to a B....made the NT 4 straight years with 3 NT wins in the last 2 seasons and I'm not qualified for a single job at any school with a higher prestige than that which I've raised Valpo to...and in fact I'm even still unqualified for a few schools that have the same prestige as Valpo now has.

Thankfully all those schools will have SIMS coaching them because that's certainly a better solution.

If you can get into the MWC, you should go for it...it's a really strong group of coaches.  There's a couple of decent schools in the Summit League that might interest you too.  As a league we aren't as strong as the MWC but we've got 3 real solid coaches and I think we're adding #4...one of the better D3 coaches in Phelan for the upcoming season too.

Something to maybe fall back on if the MWC falls through

MWC is the best fit for you.  Consider CUSA as a back-up option.  We have had the same 4 coaches for the last 3+ seasons.  Each of us are planning to stay in the long run if we get more human coaches.  Additionally, UTEP was the premiere program in the conference but they are falling really fast (they should be the 5 or 6 top team in the conference).  Any team you pick will easily land in top 6 by your second year.  We consistently land 2 or 3 teams in post season play.  Our conference will improve and we could possibly push for 3 post season play and maybe vie for 4 teams in post season play if you join.

Once again, MWC is the best place to join.  But keep an eye out for CUSA

Check out Phelan's forum.  Shqpita has his own ranking system that seems more reliable than RPI.  that could help you make your decision.

In my opinion, the best spot I have ever recruited at was Alcorn State in the Big Sky. It's within the 360 of most major Texas metropolitan areas, plus there is no LSU or really any money advantage at all with the SEC. Dirty south was very, very good to me while I was there in Phelan. I think they are probably out of your reach though.

Alcorn State is longshot, but I might be able to land it. I qualify for other teams in Big Sky, and several other teams in the area in other conf. I'm also looking at Birmingham Southern in AL but that runs into the SEC and ACC teams. Maybe Alcorn State is the best place for me to build up a D1 resume for a potential jump into a BCS conf.

The D1 map is below if you are interested. The area is wildly unpopulated by human coaches, the amount of talent I saw go unsigned or sign with D/D+ D1 teams was absurd. It's been a few seasons since I was there, so I don't know what the climate is still like.. but I'd say that's your best bet if you can land it. Just checked, looks like simmy left a few decent players to build on.. I left them with a walk in NT team for 2 years, good to see they didn't completely ruin the program

well I heard that longshot is essentially no shot. If I don't land this job, I'll probably just stay at D3; I do have potential 700 rated players next season and a 90ath/80spd guard, so the team should go deep again and my D3 resume will strengthen.

got rejected in one cycle.

To move to a BCS conf, is it better to take over a midmajor with a higher baseline but starting at D, built it up to about a B, or take over one of the bottom tier D1 Conf teams with a C to start with, and get it to a B?
8/13/2011 12:48 PM
How much higher is the baseline? Can that C prestige win now?

The C with a baseline D is graduating 4 SR, so they cannot win now. What are the odds of jumping from D2 A+ to BCS?

The odds are quite good.  Check out Bryant http://whatifsports.com/hd/TeamProfile/History.aspx?tid=14212.  They have multiple coaches jumping to BCS after competing at a high level of DII basketball for multiple years.  There are many examples of coaches making a successful jump to BCS after competing in DII.  You will have to wait a minimum of 5 years at a DI non-bcs conference before you move to BCS.
